"Rough Landing, Holly" (2006) |
Rough Landing, Holly is the second single from Lights and Sounds by American rock band Yellowcard. The music video was released to MTV2 in March and MTV in April, and was directed by Marc Webb. This track was praised by music critics as one of the stronger songs on Lights and Sounds. It is Ryan Key's favorite track on the album.
[edit] Video
The video begins with lead vocalist Ryan Key laying on his bed in an apartment, when suddenly, he gets swallowed by the bedsheets (this is where the track starts to play). Apparently, he is now in another dimension, ending up next to the wife of another man. The man notices this stranger and Ryan runs away from him. Hiding in the bathroom, Ryan quickly escapes through the window, where he ends up on a neighborhood street. Someone dressed in dark clothing gestures to offer him a drink, when Ryan notices he is in a bar filled with Asian people. The chase continues through a hallway, underwater, to a hospital bed, and back. The video is based in a scene of the film Being John Malkovich, where Cameron Diaz chases Catherine Keener within the subconscious of Malkovich.
[edit] Things to Notice
The room with the girl is the same room from Ocean Avenue's video, where Ryan was sleeping. The same girl is also from Ocean Avenue, so one could guess that she is Holly. The suitcase bears the same image on it as the case from Ocean Avenue. It is somewhat of a revelation that the suitcase, which was unopened in Ocean Avenue, is filled with water. Rough Landing, Holly and Ocean Avenue parallel each other. They were both second singles from their respective albums, they both feature Ryan running, and they both concentrate on story rather than performance.
They both also contain an homage to Brand New's video for Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades. The suitcase featured in the Yellowcard videos has the same logo on it as the one in the club in the Brand New video.
