Julia Roberts plays Maggie Carpenter, a spirited and attractive young woman who has had a number of unsuccessful relationships. Maggie, afraid of being married, has left a trail of boyfriends. Indeed, she's left three men waiting for her in church during wedding day, getting her tabloid fame and the dubious nickname Runaway Bride.
Meanwhile, in New York, reporter Ike Graham (played by Gere), writes a column about her that contains several factual errors. He's fired for it and then decides to write an in-depth article about Maggie in a bid to get his job back. He travels to Hale, Maryland, where he finds her living with her family and on her fourth attempt to become married.
After hostile beginnings, Maggie feels attracted to Ike, and Ike to Maggie. Becoming involved with her, Ike leads her to explore different feelings and emotions, making her wonder if Ike is the man of her life.
For Ike, meanwhile, the situation is similar: He likes Maggie, but he has been divorced, and remains uncertain whether or not he is prepared for a relationship. However, his passion for her grows as each day he spends in the small Maryland town passes by.
In the end, Maggie runs away from her fourth groom, and therafter marries Ike, but only after an incident in which she abandons Ike at the altar.
