Ryuhaku Todoh (藤堂竜白 Tōdō Ryūhaku?) is a fictional character from the fighting game Art of Fighting.
[edit] History
Todoh is the creator and main teacher of Todoh style karate, which derives its style from Aikido and Kendo. Todoh had a long standing rivalry with disciples of the Kyokugenryu school of karate and considers them a threat to his style of teaching in terms of profits as well as personal animosity dating back to a rivalry with Takuma Sakazaki when both men were very young.
On his quest to find his younger sister Yuri, who had been abducted by Mr. Big under Geese Howard's orders, Ryo Sakazaki blatantly attacked Todoh at his school and fought him to interrogate him about the whereabouts of his sister. After Ryo easily defeated Todoh, he was humiliated and saw his schools finances as well as his attendance at his schools suffer. After the loss, Todoh went into hiding and hasn't been seen since. Because of his disappearance, his daughter Kasumi went on a personal quest to not only try to look for her father, but to gain revenge on Ryo and all Kyokugenryu disciples to try to reclaim her family's honor.
[edit] Trivia
- In the original AOF, he had only one special move, the Kasane Ate, which looks like a downward sword slash with energy blades). His super move was the same exact move, only with a different color and name, Meiou Ken, as well as more damage dealt. This is referenced in one of his winquotes in Capcom vs. SNK 2: "You need to master more than one move in order to win!"
- In Capcom vs. SNK 2, Todoh finally resurfaced after a lengthy absence to reclaim his lost glory at the Match of the Millennium tournament and finally reunited with his daughter. It seems that Todoh's purpose is to try to gain more disciples to the Todoh School after years of suffering financial ruin at the hands of Kyokugenryu's business.
- Although Todoh returned in Capcom vs. SNK 2, Kasumi's ending in SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom proves that Todoh is still in hiding, but knows about the achievements his daughter is doing in trying to exact revenge on Kyokugenryu Karate disciples.
- Todoh appears in The King of Fighters 2000 as Kasumi's alternate striker, but is known as "Unknown" and has a shadowy shade to him, but the look and movements of the character are that of Todoh.
- He is the only character from the original Art of Fighting who didn't appear in the second game.
- Although it may be coincidential, Todoh and Takuma Sakazaki resemble Soun Tendo and Genma Saotome, respectively, from Ranma 1/2.
- Todoh and his daughter appear in the Japan stage in KOF '02. During the day scenes, he and Kasumi are having tea, or she is watching him perform some routine using fans. In the night scenes, he is passed out, and Kasumi is nowhere in sight.
- Todoh is seen several times throughout The King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2 (known as King Of Fighters 2006 in USA), once is a cameo in the Sakazaki Dojo stage and is the operater of the bull-dozer in the Extra Challenge assest. Although he has his own lifebar, the portrait used seems to be his SNK style art from Capcom vs SNK 2. (as seen in the picture on the top of the page).
- Todoh also appears as a cameo in various Samurai Shodown games, especifically in characters endings. In SS2, he appears in Gen-an Shiranui ending as a joke ending. And in SSV, he appears in Kyoshiro Senryo ending, along with Sho Hayate. Diferent from Gen-an's, in this ending, Todoh and Hayate probably are ancestors of both characters.
- He also appears in the background of Ryo Sakazaki's stage in Fatal Fury Special. We can only see his back as he is cleaning a statue.
