Numele propriu Lincoln, care este azi larg răspândit în arealul de vorbire al limbii engleze, este originar din oraşul Lincoln, Lincolnshire, un oraş din estul Angliei. Numele este o contracţie din limba latină a denumirii Lindum Colonia, care a fost numele unei colonii din Anglia fondată pentru retragerea soldaţilor romani. Când comitatele, care erau numite la timpul respectiv "shires", au fost înfinţate în secolul al 11-lea în Anglia, oraşul Lincoln a devenit cel mai important oraş al comitatului Lincolnshire. Numeroase municipalităţi din Commonwealth of Nations sunt numite în onoarea aşezării Lincoln, Lincolnshire.
