Sacro Monte di Varallo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sacred Mountain of Varallo, founded in 1491, was the first of the Italian and foreign Sacred Mountains. Its founder was the Friar Minor, Bernardino Caimi, rector of the Holy Places in Palestine. With the passing of time the original layout underwent various modifications and numerous chapels were added and completed. The best sculptors and painters of the day contributed to their realisation. The area within the holy enclosure is subdivided into two zones: one, on the slopes, is lush with plants and vegetation and organised like a garden; the other, on the summit of the mountain, is laid out like a city. Saint Carlo Borromeo frequently visited the Sacred Mountain in the 17th century.
