Sarıyahşi

Sarıyahşi is a small district of Aksaray Province of Turkey, 110 km from the city of Aksaray. It covers an area of 224 km², and has an altitude of 870 m. The population (2000) is 13.232 of which 8,280 live in the town of Sarıyahşi, the remainder in surrounding villages. The population in 1990 was 10,728.
The district is good agricultural land watered by Hirfanlı reservoir, and used for growing grain and other crops. There is a uranium mine in the village of Bekdik and various stone quarries.
The town of Sarıyahşi is a small rural centre providing schools and other basic amenities to the surrounding countryside.

This part of central Anatolia has seen the passage of numerous great armies and civilisations from Alexander the Great, through Romans and Byzantines, the Seljuk Turks (in 1096). Then the Crusades, and further waves of Turks including the Hallaj tribe from northern Iran and the Emirbey. Finally from 1402 the area came within the Ottoman Empire.
