Setting Off (Japanese: 旅立ち - Tabidachi) is the 220th and final episode of the anime series Naruto. It is the 12th episode of the ninth season. This episode is the culmination of the first part of the Naruto story. A new series, Naruto: Shippūden ("Hurricane Chronicles"), will pick up two and a half years after the first series ended, and will cover the second arc of the Naruto story.
[edit] Plot
Gaara, partially transformed into Shukaku, faces off against Seimei. Seimei is intrigued, saying that he’s never seen the real thing before. Naruto orders Matsuri to retreat, saying that Gaara is trying to protect her. The rest of the Sand and Leaf ninjas arrive, and Sakura attends to Naruto’s injuries.
Temari tells Shikamaru that the situation is bad, and Shikamaru tells Sakura to hurry up. Neji uses his Byakugan and sees that Seimei is draining Gaara’s chakra. Lee tells him about Suiko’s chakra-absorbing armor, and Matsuri tells them about Seimei. Naruto says that Seimei has stolen Gaara’s chakra, and Shino warns that they had better keep their distance. Shikamaru is hard-pressed to come up with a plan of attack.
Meanwhile, Seimei boasts that while he hadn’t planned on fighting Shukaku, defeating it would prove that he is invincible. Gaara flashes back to the end of his fight with Naruto, and how he fought so hard for the sake of his friends. Gaara marshals his willpower and forcibly suppresses the transformation, reverting to his normal appearance. Temari and Kankuro are impressed by his determination.
Gaara states that he will help his friends with his own power. Seimei attacks with Ryūgan’s sword, and inflicts minor wounds on Gaara. Seimei says that this is as far as Gaara goes, but Gaara just smiles at him. Seimei thinks that Gaara is bluffing, and doesn’t have enough chakra to fight with. Gaara retorts that he wasn’t just sitting around in the cage, twiddling his thumbs. He uses “Quicksand Avalanche”, which takes a few seconds to work. Seimei thinks that the jutsu has failed, but Gaara says that for him, breaking stones and turning minerals into sand is easy.
The surrounding valley walls start to break apart, and huge chunks of rock fall all around, and on Seimei. Gaara also generates enough sand to completely cover the valley floor, forcing the others to move out of the way. Seimei emerges from the sand and uses his armor to drain even more chakra from Gaara.
Gaara responds by using a variation on the technique that killed Suikon. He forms a hardened spear out of sand, but this time with a longer shaft and large, elaborate head, the Ultimate Absolute Attack: Shukaku’s Spear, which he hurls at Seimei. The spear shatters his chakra-absorbing armor and penetrates deep into Seimei's abdomen. Seimei is shocked, unable to understand how Gaara has defeated him.
Seimei is unable to maintain his chakra without the armor, and Gaara finishes him off with Desert Imperial Funeral. Gaara then collapses, but Sakura examines him and says that he is alright; just exhausted from overusing his chakra.
Temari and Kankuro express their admiration for Gaara’s ability to suppress the transformation into Shukaku. Kankuro flashes back to a conversation he had with Gaara, and muses that Gaara finally has someone who understands him; Naruto. Naruto and Gaara recover in Konoha hospital, where Naruto finds that Jiraiya has returned to Konoha, and is ready to begin his training. Jiraiya explains a little about Akatsuki, and Gaara, who is in the very next bed, seems to be listening intently.
Shikamaru sees the Sand-nin off, again exchaning comments with Temari. Matsuri asks Shikamaru to relay a message to Naruto, saying that because of him, she understands what Gaara was trying to tell her, and that she will work hard under Gaara's instruction. Shikamaru is a little confused by this, wondering exactly what Naruto did.
In Tsunade's office, she tells Shikamaru she is unable to give him a perfect mark on the mission. Shikamaru lays the blame on his lack of experience. Tsunade then tells him that she'll be sending him on many more missions, which worries him.
Ino approaches Sakura and asks if she can become a medic-nin too. Sakura agrees, but points out that it would make her Ino's “big sister” and senpai, which sparks an argument between the two.
Meanwhile Tenten, who is angry that she missed out on the mission, spars with Lee. Tenten, Lee, Shino, Kiba and Choji discuss Naruto's trip and resolve to train even harder while he's gone. Then we see Neji and Hinata sparring at the Hyuuga complex. Neji soon stops to tell Hinata that Naruto is about to leave. Naruto is then seen with Iruka eating a last bowl of ramen at Ichiraku. Jiraiya tells Naruto it's time to go.
Naruto waves goodbye to his first sensei (and sticks him with the check). He then pauses to look at the Hokage heads and asks the Fourth to watch over him. With that, Jiraiya tells Naruto to hurry up or he'll leave him behind. As they walk, Hinata watches Naruto leave and promises to herself that she will work hard to keep up with Naruto when he returns. The episode then ends with Naruto leaving, with the Hokage heads in the background.
