Simon Edmund Vincent Paul Elwes (29 June 1902 - 6 August 1975) was a British painter and scion to the Cary-Elwes recusant family.
Elwes (pronounced "El-wez") [1] is the son of Gervase Cary Elwes (1866 - 1921), diplomat and tenor who was killed in a railway accident while on American tour,[2] and Winifride Mary Elizabeth Feilding, daughter of Rudolph William Basil Feilding, 8th Earl of Denbigh and 7th Earl of Desmond (1823 - 1892).
He married the Hon. Gloria Rodd, the daughter of Rennell Rodd, 1st Baron Rennell and had three sons, including painter Dominic Elwes, who is the father of actor Cary Elwes, artist Damian Elwes, and movie producer Cassian Elwes.
Elwes was also scandalously linked with the socialite Penelope Aitken.
He served as a lieutenant colonel in the Tenth Hussars during World War II. At age 43, he lost use of his right painting hand and learned to paint with his left after suffering from a near-death experience caused by a blood clot in his brain, which paralysed the right half of his face and body. [1]
