Simon Walton (born September 13, 1987 in Leeds, England) is a football player who is currently on loan to Cardiff City from Charlton Athletic.
A defender in his youth days, he is currently signed to Charlton Athletic in the FA Premier League as a midfielder. He is best known for his debut for Leeds United in pre-season 2004, against Spanish club Valencia, when he scored a penalty, then was sent off for two bookable offences, while still 16.
He has been likened to former Elland Road heroes Alan Smith and David Batty, with whom he shares tenacity and "Leeds blood" in his veins. He scored three goals in his first season and was a bright part of Leeds United's future as it continued to rebuild in its attempt to return to the FA Premier League.
Walton, however, struggled to break into the first team during the 2005-06 season with his only appearances coming after injuries to Sean Gregan, Shaun Derry, Jonathan Douglas and Gylfi Einarsson. In July 2006 he joined Charlton Athletic for a fee of £500,000, although this could rise to £1m. He quickly moved on-loan to get some regular first-team football, moving to Ipswich Town three games into the Championship season on the 18 August 2006.
Walton scored in only his second game for Ipswich, a penalty in a 3-1 victory over Q.P.R he then followed this up in the next game with a penalty in a 2-1 victory over Southampton. After his loan spell with Ipswich ended in January 2007, he joined Cardiff on loan, making his debut against Barnsley live on Sky Sports in a 2-0 win. Two weeks later he faced his home town club and was sent off for two bookable offences in a 1-0 victory
Simon's sister Sophie Walton plays for Leeds United Ladies [1].
