Smíchov
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Smíchov (German: Smichow) is one district of Prague, part of Prague 5.
The district is located on the left bank of the riverVltava.
Between 1945 and 1989, the district was known for a Monument dedicated to Soviet tanks in WWII, located on Štefánik square. The monument was removed shortly after the Velvet Revolution and a new glass-and-steel building designed by French architect Jean Nouvel became symbol of the district. An angel from Wim Wenders' movie Wings of Desire looks from its facade. It reminds of a previous building with a statue of angel on its facade, which has been demolished in the 1980s when a metro station was built in its vicinity and the local traffic hub was renamed from Anděl to Moskevská (after Moscow).
Staropramen brewery is located there. The Ringhoffer factory, nationalized after WWII and producer of trams for the entire Eastern bloc, was moved to Zličín in the 1990s, now operated by Siemens . The buildings were demolished and replaced by hypermarket, two multiplex cinemas, two hotels and several other commercial structures.
[edit] Smíchov in the Art
- 1995 – an escalator scene from Svěrák's Kolya was shot there. However, the mosaic with Lenin's Mausoleum on a Red Square was later displaced. Only the second socialist realism mosaic at the southern elevator exit remained.
- 1999 – Vladimír Michálek's movie Angel Exit pictured among others the semi-constructed Jean Nouvel's building, the abandoned Jewish synagogue, half-demolished Ringoffer factory, St Wenceslas Church and Bertramka cemetery.
