Southwestern Christian College
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Southwestern Christian College ("SwCC") is a historically black college in Terrell, Texas operated by members of the Churches of Christ, making it the sole extant institution of its kind. SwCC is primarily a junior college and offers only two years of study in most fields outside of those involving preparation for full-time ministry, which in the Churches of Christ is traditionally limited solely to males. A few more junior- and senior-level courses have been offered in fairly recent years, but a concerted effort has been made by the Board of Trustees not to allow the college's somewhat-limited resources to be spread too thinly. Southwestern's junior college graduates typically earn the Associate of Arts degree, and have a much higher than average success rate upon transfer to four-year institutions, whether historically black or not, than is typical of junior college graduates or college students as a whole. The college is currently headed by respected black educator and minister Dr. Jack Evans, Sr. SwCC was founded in 1948, and became fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1973.
