Sechelt Airport:
On BC's Sunshine Coast, this airstrip with its amazingly dry microclimate hosts drag racing on two Sundays every year: May and August. Hundreds of amateur and serious racers come from BC and elsewhere for a loud and enjoyable family day in the sun. In this sparsely populated area of SW British Columbia, 4,000 to 5,000 locals and visitors turn out to this event. The track uses only 1/8 mile of the runway, so that cars aren't overstressed or dangerously fast, though some racers have hit 150 mph in under 5 seconds! Amateur drag racing is perhaps the world's most democratic sport, and the crowd cheers a Mini struggling to 50 mph just as much as an alcohol-burning dragster. Sechelt Airport offers local and regional air services of all kinds, and is home to a flying club and charter companies. Sechelt Airport is posted off the 101 highway at Wilson Creek.
