Springfield is a city in Bon Homme County, South Dakota, USA. The population was 792 at the 2000 census.

Springfield is located at GR1.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 792 people, 356 households, and 218 families residing in the city. The population density was 470.5/km² (1,211.6/mi²). There were 400 housing units at an average density of 237.6/km² (611.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.43% White, 0.38% African American, 4.80% Native American, and 1.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.25% of the population.
There were 356 households out of which 26.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.5% were non-families. 33.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.77.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 23.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $29,464, and the median income for a family was $40,625. Males had a median income of $25,227 versus $21,071 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,863. About 8.5% of families and 9.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
[edit] Miscellaneous Facts
An artesian well used to supply a swimming pool located at Terrace Park on the Missouri River banks, but the pool has not existed for 45 years. A newer pool is now present at West Side Park.
A nine hole golf course graces the high bluffs along the Missouri River.
Springfield is the home to Mike Durfee State Prison which is located on the campus of the former University of South Dakota at Springfield. The 1984 Legislature closed USD/S and authorized the Board of Charities and Corrections to establish the correctional facility. Springfield State Prison opened in December of 1984 when the female inmates from the Women's Correctional Facility in Yankton, SD were transferred to the new institution. Male inmates began transferring to the institution in January 1985.
