Storyteller System
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Storyteller System is the predecessor to the Storytelling System. It was used in the old World of Darkness setting as a base to the storyteller games Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Mage: The Ascension, Wraith: The Oblivion, Changeling: The Dreaming, Kindred of the East, Mummy: the Resurrection, Hunter: the Reckoning, Orpheus and Demon: The Fallen.
It also was used in other games from White Wolf like Exalted, the Trinity line, and Street Fighter: The Role-Playing Game. In its early days White Wolf also published universal fantasy supplementals which used the trait measurement in five steps, like the Storyteller System does.
The Storyteller System is discontinued and succeeded by the Storytelling System, as are the games based on them.
[edit] Game mechanics
A character had different character traits, represented in values from zero to five or one to ten. All games of the Storyteller System differed in their sets of traits, but some traits remained in every game (namely the attributes, some Abilities and the willpower trait).
The dice rolling in the system required only ten-sided dice (d10). Usually two traits measured by zero to five were added to determine the number of dice rolled. The Storyteller (game leader) then stated a difficulty (between 3 and 10) depending on the task at hand. All dice that matched or exceeded the difficulty were regarded as successes, while all below the difficulty were ignored. As an optional rule, every 1 rolled, removed one success.
Usually three successes were a full success (as expected), while one success was a poor victory, but still a victory. Five successes were regarded as outstanding and overachieving the goal (if possible).
Traits based on a trait measured between 1 and 10 were usually rolled alone.
