Switchel

Switchel, also switzel or haymaker's punch, is a drink made of molasses mixed with water and seasoned with vinegar and ginger. It originated in the West Indies and became popular as a summer drink in the American Colonies in the late 1600s. By the 1800s, it had become a tradition to serve it to thirsty farmers at hay harvest time. In the U.S. state of Vermont oatmeal and lemon juice is sometimes added to the beverage.
Switchel was often kept in a hollow ring-shaped canteen which could be carried over the shoulder or arm or on the belt; compare gueuze.
