Salman Rushdie

Salman Rushdie is an author of many books. Rushdie was born in India, but lives in England.
He wrote a book in the year 1988, called The Satanic Verses. This book included Islamic prophet Muhammad as a character. Many countries banned the book. They found the book offensive, and did not want stores to sell it.
The leader of the country of Iran talked on the radio about Rushdie. He said that Rushdie did not believe in Islam. He said that Rushdie and the book's publishers should be executed for the book. This is called a fatwa. In the year 1989, the British government began protecting Rushdie. In 1990, Rushdie wrote an essay, to try and prove he believed in Islam. Many commentators believe that he did this out of fear of his life, rather than his believe in Islam.
He has been married four times. Salman Rushdie is now married to actress and model Padma Lakshmi.
