[edit] History
The name Tenison Woods reminds us of the contribution made by the pioneer priest, scientist and educator Fr. Julian Tenison-Woods to Catholic education.
The school was formally established in 2001 as an R-12 Catholic co-Education college as a result of the combined efforts of the Parish of Mount Gambier, the Boards and community of Tenison College and St. Pauls Primary School.
The Sisters of Mercy began teaching in Mount Gambier in 1880 and moved into the Penola Road convent in 1908, at that stage called St. Joseph's Convent of Our Lady of Mercy. In 1952 the Parish School of Saint Paul's was merged with St. Joseph's to become Mater Christi College. In 1969 the primary section once more became St Paul's School with secondary education functioning independently as Mater Christi College.
In 1972, Tenison College was formed following the merging of Mater Christi College and Marist Brothers' Agricultural College.
In ensuing years, both St. Paul's and Tenison College have emerged as significant Catholic educational institutions within the South East of South Australia.
[edit] Location
The site that Tenison Woods College occupies was once part of a pastoral holding, Moorak Station. In the late 1920s the Parish of Mount Gambier purchased part of the remaining property from the Pegler family to establish a secondary school for boys. That school, which began in 1931, was known as Marist Brothers Agricultural College.
[edit] Facts
- Tenison Woods College now has over 1000 students and over 100 staff members.
- The computer systems at Tenison Woods College has recently been changed from computers to Terminals which has caused confusion amongst less computer gifted staff and students. Although the actually reason for the terminals is to prevent people from hacking into folders on the public drive commonly known as Common General and gaining control over folders and preventing administrators from gaining access to the folder. Also the new computers are harder to key log meaning it is harder for people to steal your password.
- Tenison Woods College is one of the only R - 12 schools in Australia which teaches students years 8 - 12 the animation program called Maya which is known for such creations as Finding Nemo, Toy Story etc.
- Tenison Woods College is also one school in Australia which is begging to teach older students programming with the program Game Maker Although this is only thought to students in year 12.
