[edit] Shown Animals

Name First Appearance Picture Summary

[edit] Badgermole

"The Cave of Two Lovers" Badgermoles are giant earthbending creatures that are a cross between the European badger and the mole. They have brown fur with one white and two black stripes running down their backs and white, mask-like patches on their faces. Their markings resemble those of the badger, whereas their claws and tails are distinctly akin to moles. Badgermoles are basically blind, but their earthbending abilities allow them to feel the presence of their surroundings in recompense. They enjoy hearing music, which seems to put them in an almost tranquil state. If fully and properly tamed, Badgermoles can be used as beasts of burden and perform tasks such as paving pathways or clearing stone debris. In "The Cave of Two Lovers" it was revealed that Badgermoles are responsible for teaching humans how to Earthbend.

[edit] Boar-Q-Pine

"Appa's Lost Days" The boar-q-pine was briefly seen in "Appa's Lost Days". One of these has a fight with Appa, severely injuring him. Their snouts and body resemble those of a boar's while the quills on their hides resemble that of a porcupine's.

[edit] Buffalo-Yak

"The Waterbending Master" Buffalo-Yak are domesticated creatures native to the North Pole that can be seen pulling carts and carrying riders in the Northern Water Tribe. The large gray and white animals have horns atop their heads that curve backwards, resembling those of a water buffalo or wildebeest. Their furry, hoofed legs and transportation use resemble those of a domesticated Yak.

[edit] Buzzard-Wasp

"The Desert" Buzzard-Wasps are a cross between the buzzard and the wasp. Their residence is on the Si Wong Rock, which is used by the Sandbenders to navigate through the desert. The fluid Buzzard-Wasps produce is akin to honey but has the flavor of "rotten penguin meat." This "honey" is possibly created from the carrion that the buzzard-wasps eat, in the same fashion bees make real honey from flower nectar. This would account for the rotten meat flavor.

[edit] Canyon Crawler

"The Great Divide The Canyon Crawlers are large, dangerous animals that resemble a strange mix of crocodile and spider. The creatures primarily inhabit the canyon of The Great Divide, but their habitat widely extends throughout the arid terrain of the Western Earth Kingdom. They have eight eyes on either side of their faces, and forked tongues in a sharp-toothed jaw. Much like a traditional arachnid, Crawlers retain a two-segmented body made up of a cephalothorax and an abdomen, and their four skinny legs attach to this center body. With their arachnid characteristics, the canyon crawlers are able to run up sheer mountain walls, obviously earning them their name. The Canyon Crawlers also contain multiple sensitive nostrils, causing them to be easily attracted by the scent of food. Though Crawlers prefer live meat and their various useful features make them the perfect hunters, Canyon Crawlers primarily are omnivorous scavengers that are willing to eat whatever they can find. In the video game, they are the most powerful enemies.

[edit] Catgator

"The Swamp" A large, seemingly domesticated, green reptile, the Catgator resembles a cross between a catfish and an alligator. Its large body is identical to that of an alligator, except for a fin that wraps around its tail, and small fins attached at the knees. Its mouth contains many sharp teeth inside a smoothly round head with barbell whiskers. The species most represented by the catfish gator is the channel catfish, noticed easily by the whiskers near their mouths.

The Foggy Swamp Tribe keeps Catgators as pets like one would a dog.

[edit] Cat Owl

"City of Walls and Secrets" The Cat Owl was first seen in a pet shop in Ba Sing Se. It has the head of a common house cat with the body shape and wings of an owl. Its white fur covers its head, upper torso, and claws that replace the owl talons. Its body resembles coloration as well as facial appearance creates an image of a Great Horned Owl. It has a tail, also furred, that is feline.

[edit] Dragon

"The Spirit World (Winter Solstice, Part 1)" Though only seen as a spirit or in a flashback (as Roku’s animal guide), the dragon of the Avatar world seems to be based mostly on the Chinese dragon, but with the inclusion of wings, a more common trait in the European dragon. Dragons can breathe fire, a fitting example in the Avatar world, as firebending comes from the breath. There seems to be many types of colors of dragons as seen in "The Earth King."

[edit] Dragonfly

"Tales of Ba Sing Se" The Dragon Fly is a combination of the dragonfly and Chinese dragon with a body like a dragon and two pairs of wings on its back like a dragonfly. Unlike the indistinct recognition it has to a dragonfly though, it is much bigger and can be a nuisance like a regular fly.

[edit] Dragon Hawk

"The Blue Spirit" N/A Though they exhibit the overall appearance of the fowl, Dragon hawks retain the characteristics of a homing pigeon with their innate ability to locate people and places, an abilitiy that was recognized centuries ago by Fire Nation citizens who originally kept them as pets. Trained specifically to deliver messages over long distances in metal containers attached to their talons, the birds now play a vital role in the Fire Nation military as they are an essential means of communication between its factions.

The Dragon Hawk was originally designed to be and served as Prince Zuko's pet in the unaired pilot. The hawk is subsequently displayed delivering messages in "The Blue Spirit" and "Return to Omashu".

[edit] Elbow Leech

"The Swamp" An Elbow Leech is an oversized leech with a white dot on each of its large segments, though these dots may be light reflected off its body. They have apparently received their name due to their uncanny ability to attach specifically to the elbow of humans and possibly other bipedal animals. They do suck blood. It is unknown if they also have a mouth on the other side of their body as well, though it appears that they are able to latch on tight enough that it will require multiple pulls on the creature before it releases its grip.

[edit] Elephant Koi

"The Warriors of Kyoshi" Elephant Koi are huge orange and yellow koi fish that appear to be over forty feet long. The koi share no real similarities to elephants, and are most likely named due to their enormous size. Elephant Koi can be ridden if caught. Although Elephant Koi are large in size, they also are prey to the much larger Unagi. The koi are actually Kyoshi Island's main export, as fishermen commonly hunt them for food, blubber, and oil.

[edit] Elephant Rat

"Avatar Day" The Elephant Rat is a small black rodent with white patches around its eyes, though like most rats, its color may vary. The animal is identical to the common rat, aside from a small, trunk-like nose. The elephant rat was first seen scurrying around the prison in the city of Chin. Due to this location, the elephant rat probably acts like normal rats, hiding in dark places and locating scraps of uneaten food.

[edit] Flying Bison

"The Boy in the Iceberg" Sometimes referred to as "Sky Bison," "Wind Buffalo," or "Air Bison," flying bison are ten-ton, six-legged crosses between a bison and a manatee. Aside from the extra pair of legs and their paws, flying bison share the appearance of an ordinary bison in head, body, and horn shape. Their noses resemble that of a beaver, though wider, and their tails are flat. The legs resemble those of an elephant, though pawed, and have digits that have been extended outward. Flying bison have naturally-grown, arrow-shaped patch of brown fur that runs to their tail. The Air Nomads honor the bison for teaching them Airbending by tattooing themselves with similar arrows when they have achieved mastery. Flying bison use their tails as a rudder of sorts when taking off or accelerating, as seen in the backshots of Aang's bison, Appa, when taking to the air. Flying bison are also capable of standing up on their back pair of legs for a short period of time.

Appa is the only known living flying bison and Aang's animal guide.

[edit] Flying Boar

"The Swamp" The Flying Boar is little more than a boar with wings. In the Avatar world, the Flying Boar is the symbol of the Bei Fong family. A Flying Boar's appearance in a vision by Aang in the Foggy Swamp allowed him to locate Toph, the girl it was with in his vision. In our world the pigasus is a symbol of aspiration, a fitting symbol for one of the richest Earth Kingdom families.

It is possible that it is not a "real" animal, as it is only seen in a vision and in pictures associated with the Bei Fong family.

[edit] Giant Fly

"The Swamp" The Giant Fly is an enormous brown-green insect that resembles an ordinary fruit fly with red eyes, translucent wings, and a fourth pair of legs. Its wings are abnormally small for the size of its body and it is unknown if it can actually fly. The Foggy Swamp Tribe enjoys them as food.

[edit] Gilacorn

"Appa's Lost Days" A gila monster (poisonous lizard) equipped with a deadly unicorn-like horn. Gilacorns were once gigantic enough to threaten human inhabitants of the Si Wong Desert, but only their diminutive descendants survive today as just another scavenger species in the Desert.

A Gilacorn was briefly seen snatching an egg right under a hungry Appa's nose in "Appa's Lost Days".

[edit] Glow Fly

"The Swamp" A Glow Fly is a small insect indistinguishable from the common house fly. However, once provoked, the glow fly emits a luminescent glow that can easily blind threats. It is unknown if the Glow Fly uses its glow to attract mates (like the firefly), but the light it produces is strong enough to be seen from a large distance. The glow seems to become active at the Glow Fly's will.

[edit] Goat Gorilla

"The King of Omashu." The Goat Gorilla is a roughly ten foot tall combination of gorilla and goat, but shares many personality characteristics with a pet dog. It has a dark, primate-like face of a gorilla, with two enlarged lower canine teeth, and long, rabbit-like ears. Two massive forearms let the Goat Gorilla walk on all fours, and like the gorilla, the hands have opposable thumbs. The rest of their body looks mostly like the goat, with a humped back behind the head, hooved back legs, and two horns at the top of the head. The only known goat gorilla so far is Flopsie, King Bumi's pet. Flopsie has been known to lick his owner's face, has a very large tongue that sometimes hangs outside his mouth, and enjoys getting his belly rubbed.

When Omashu was taken over by the Fire Nation, Flopsie was used as a slave; his strength was used to move heavy objects.

[edit] Hog Monkey

"Jet" The Hog Monkey’s resemblance to a hog comes mostly from its face, which is dark skinned with a pug nose and snout. It also has two tusks coming from its lower jaw. Like the hybrid creatures found at Lee's farm, the Hog Monkey makes grunts like a baboon howl combined with a pig squeal. The Hog Monkey has red eyes with a monkey body mostly resembling that of a baboon. The lower half of their body is covered with hair that is less thick than the upper portion. They appear in the video game as weak enemies.

[edit] Hybrid Pigs

"Zuko Alone"
Hybrid Pigs include the Wooly-pig (sheep pig), Moo-sow (cow pig), Picken (chicken pig), Pigster (rooster pig), and Deer-pig.

Most likely used in commercial farming, these animals all resemble their respective animal but with pig heads that blend with the rest of their bodies' colorings. Their legs are short and hooved like those of a pig. The deer pig has the same bushy tail and large antlers as a deer. Each type talks with a combination of their animals' traditional noise, including the Pigster, which clucks and oinks simultaneously.

[edit] Koalaotter

"The Waterbending Master" The Koalaotter is a hybrid of a koala and a sea otter. Aside from the koala head and color, the koalaotter looks and acts like an otter. First seen in the frozen waters of the North Pole, the Koalaotter likes to lazily backstroke in the frozen water using its tail, which resembles an otter tail with the flatness of a beaver tail.

[edit] Komodo Rhino

"The Warriors of Kyoshi" The Komodo Rhino is a cross between a komodo dragon and a rhinoceros. It has a large frontal horn at its nose and two more growing out the side of its head by its ears. Its tail and mouth are reptilian, and it has clawed feet. Due to their three horns and predominantly reptilian appearance, they bear a great resemblance to the triceratops from the late Cretaceous. The Fire Nation uses these rhinos in the war as cavalry, often decorating them in red. They are enemies ridden by Firebenders in the video game.

[edit] Mongoose Dragon

"The Chase" The Mongoose Dragon is a giant lizard that is very similar to a plumed basilisk in its markings and raised chest, as well as a few plumed areas of skin above the head. It has bright yellow eyes and can be mounted for travel. Like the plumed basilisk, the mongoose dragon can run over water on its hind legs for short distances across water. The mongoose half of the name comes not only from the creature’s ears, but also from its elongated face (similar to that of the long-nosed cusimanse). Mongoose Dragons were domesticated from the Fire Nation's tropical jungles.

Mongoose dragons have been used as mounts by Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee.

[edit] Ostrich Horse

"The Spirit World (Winter Solstice, Part 1)" Bearing the name of two mountable animals, the ostrich horse is the main mount of the Earth Kingdom. Its body, covered in short feathers, resembles that of an ostrich, including its legs, wings, and feet. It has a hairy tail, and an equine neck and head, though its mouth is an avian beak. The Earth Kingdom has bred these animals as war mounts and they can often be seen wearing armor.

[edit] Otter-Penguin

"The Boy in the Iceberg" Commonly referred to as simply penguins, the Otter-Penguins in the Avatar world are a hybrid of a penguin and an otter. They are about the size of a human child and, once caught, can be ridden like sleds in a popular children's game. They have an extra pair of flippers below their first pair, a face resembling that of a seal, and an otter-like tail. It is unknown if these creatures are furred, or are feathered like traditional penguins.

[edit] Platypus Bear

"The Fortuneteller" The Platypus Bear is a hybrid creature resembling a cross between the bear and the platypus. Easily provoked, the Platypus Bear has been known to attack humans with its massive bear paws or teeth-lined bill. The Platypus Bear's body is mostly that of a bear, except for flat-webbed hind legs, a furry beaver-like tail, and the duck-like bill. The Platypus Bear lays eggs.

The Platypus Bear can also be trained and has been seen as both a circus animal and a brute enforcer. The Platypus Bear appear in the video game as enemies.

[edit] Polar Bear Dog

"The Boy in the Iceberg" This creature is the size of a large dog. So far, it has only been seen in "The Boy in the Iceberg" at the Southern Water Tribe's village. It has a pink or reddish nose, rounded ears and three toed paws. Its fur is white except for a black striped pattern that begins at its nose and runs over its forehead and along its back.

[edit] Polar Mouse

"The Boy in the Iceberg" The polar mouse of the Avatar world looks like but is quite a bit different than a real hamster. While it still squeaks in the same tone and is about the same size, it also has many cat-like characteristics. Its tail is long like a cat's, though mostly flat, and it has a triangular head with cat-like ears. The small rodent was first seen scurrying through an abandoned Fire Navy ship near the South Pole.

[edit] Possum Chicken

"The Swamp" The possum chicken is a delicacy of the Foggy Swamp Tribe, most likely created as a pun on the tribe's persona as hillbillies. The white animal has an opossum face and tail. Its chicken side lies in its small talon feet and stubby wings. The possum chicken has a unique taste similar to that of chicken. Due makes the statement "tastes like possum chicken," a pun on the comical saying "tastes like chicken."

A possum chicken was first seen hanging upside down, a feat credited with the opossum but one they actually can't perform.

[edit] Purple Pentapus

"Return to Omashu" The purple pentapus is a tiny, purple, octopus-like creature with five tentacles and eyes and appears to be a mix of an octupus and a starfish. It has a small beak like a normal octopus and suckers on its tentacles which it uses to stick to sewer walls and feed on algae. It can latch on to humans, and stay very tightly attached. However, it will release its grip if stroked on the head, leaving red pox-like marks where it was attached.

The Purple Pentapus was first seen in the Omashu sewers.

[edit] Pygmy Puma

"Tales of Ba Sing Se" As their name suggests, these creatures are about the size of the average house cat, and otherwise resemble melanistic leopards. Considered to be the "Kings of the Alleyways," they were bred for city living and have adapted to it quite well, being able to scale walls and fences with ease, as well as leap from building to building in the blink of an eye. They can be quite ferocious but at other times seem to be quite affectionate.

A Pygmy Puma pack was first seen in an alley in Ba Sing Se.

[edit] Rabbiroo

"Tales of Ba Sing Se" The Rabbiroo resembles a cross between a rabbit and a kangaroo. It has the head and ears on a rabbit with the body of a kangaroo. It retains the rabbit’s appetite for leafy vegetables. Their offspring are raised in the same method as the kangaroo with the young remaining in the mother’s pouch. Unlike the kangaroo, they tend to have multiple births. The Rabbiroo usually resides in open prairies. Baby Rabbiroos have a chunky, potato-like body shaped similar to that of baby rabbits.

[edit] Reptile Bird

"The Waterbending Scroll" The Reptile Bird resembles a cross between a green parrot and a lizard. It has a parrot beak, feathered tail, and wings capable of flight. The rest of its body resembles many small lizards, with spines down its back and legs. It has a clawed hand at the end of its wings, which it uses with its back legs to crawl around when it isn’t flying.

The Reptile Bird resembles the archaeopteryx of the late Jurassic period.

[edit] Saber-tooth Moose-lion

"Bitter Work" The Saber-tooth Moose-lion is a large, brown creature native to the forests of the Southern Earth Kingdom. They are a cross between a saber-tooth tiger and a moose and stand at about the size of a large moose. Its head's appearance is that of a moose's, with both genders having large curved antlers, and two enlarged upper fangs. Its body and legs resemble a feline's with pawed feet and a lion-like tail. Their cubs are distinguishable from their adult counterparts until their giant horns and massive tusks have grown and their stubby tails extended. They are usually friendly creatures until provoked.

Sokka nicknamed the first moose-lion cub to appear in the show "Foo foo cuddly poofs".

[edit] Screaming Bird

"The Swamp" A puffed up bird found in Foggy Swamp, it appears as a pudgy feathered lump. The bird's beak, though tiny, can extend well beyond the size of the bird's head in order to let it emit a loud, ear-splitting shriek that sounds like a woman screaming. The bird does not really have any real world connections beyond its appearance as a bird, although its terrifying shriek may have been inspired by the call of the real-life Spot-bellied Eagle-owl.

[edit] Serpent

"The Serpent's Pass" The Serpent is a huge amphibious snake, somewhat like the Unagi, with a body length ranging over a hundred feet long. Despite its considerable size, it is able to move swiftly through the water undetected for the most part, enabling it to steathily close in on it prey. Known for letting out a loud, piercing scream just prior to attacking, the Serpent is a fierce creature and seemingly guards the Serpent's Pass outside Ba Sing Se. It resembles a Chinese dragon with a little bit of seahorse when its mouth is closed due to the long cylinder mouth. This sea serpent first made its appearance in the original pilot episode of The Avatar series.

[edit] Shirshu

"Bato of the Water Tribe" A Shirshu is a large, wolf-like creature resembling a star-nosed mole. Its nose is used to "see" scents and find its prey, having no real eyes to speak of. The bottom portions of their legs are also similar in appearance. Its body, head, and tail mostly resemble that of a wolf or other type of canine. It is able to track its prey from over a continent away, and one is shown used by the bounty hunter June as a mount. Its tongue is barbed at the end and it secretes a venom capable of eventually bringing down creatures larger than itself, including Appa, leaving them completely paralyzed for up to one hour. The venom it secretes can also be harvested and used to produce non-deadly tranquilizer darts. Shirshu appear in the game as moderate enemies.

[edit] Singing Groundhog

"The Library Singing Groundhogs are responsive to musical notes, and will sing any note that they hear. They burrow into the ground and live in a community like prairie dogs. Aang demonstrated the groundhogs to his group, and they even responded to Sokka's sarcastic "La de dah."

[edit] Sparrowkeet

"City of Walls and Secrets" Used as pets in Ba Sing Se, the Sparrowkeet has the head of a sparrow with the same beak coloration. Their bodies resemble that of the Carolina Parakeet.

[edit] Tigerdillo

"Tales of Ba Sing Se" The Tigerdillo was seen briefly in "Tales of Ba Sing Se", in the old zoo. An intriguingly contrasting creature, it is large animal that seems very aggressive, especially when hungry, but also very passive and quick to retract. It has the body and head of a Tiger, but its back is plated with an armadillo-like shell that continues to extend to the top of its head. A Tigerdillo is able to roll up into a ball when startled, much like that of a three-banded armadillo.

[edit] Tree Chameleon

"Avatar Day" The Tree Chameleon resembles the veiled chameleon in body structure. It has what looks like feathers extending from its forearms (or wings attached near them, it is only seen at a distance), though it is unknown if the creature is capable of flight.

[edit] Turkey Duck

’’The Fortuneteller’’ This creature resembles a cross between a turkey, a duck and a chicken. It has the same down-like feathers and beak as a duck, the feet and tail feathers of a chicken, and snood of a turkey. They seem to have an irritable personality, especially towards Sokka, who has the poor fortune of annoying the birds several times.

The creature could be a reference to the turducken, a unique style of serving cooked fowl.

[edit] Turtle Duck

"Zuko Alone" The Turtle Duck has the head, neck, and tail of a duck, all attached to the shell of a turtle. Its feet appear to be a combination of both animals. It is tan and brown with a white bill and pale stripe on its head. The turtle duck has no wings, though it is still a great flier. Its personality seems to match that of a duck.

Turtle ducks are first seen in a flashback of a pond at Zuko’s home.

[edit] Turtle Seal

"The Siege of the North" The Turtle Seal is simply a seal with a turtle's shell. Unlike the turtle duck, whose legs make it look like a tortoise, the Turtle Seal's flippers are its prominent form of transportation; its body resembles a sea turtle. Its diet consists of fish, squid, and shellfish and its hard shell serves as protection from its main predator, the Polar Leopard.

Turtle seals were first seen in a small ice cave near the North Pole.

[edit] Unagi

"The Warriors of Kyoshi" The Unagi is a giant sea serpent capable of spewing out a large water stream like a geyser. Aside from its eel-like body structure and large fin on its head, the Unagi resembles a catfish, having barbels, a pointed head, and no scales. Along with its fierce appearance, the Unagi also has a large body that looks to be 200-300 feet long. The Unagi's primary source of food appears to be the Elephant Koi that swim with it off the shore of Kyoshi Island.

Unagi is the Japanese word for freshwater eels.

[edit] Vulture Griffin

"Appa's Lost Days" Image:VultureGriffin.gif The Vulture Griffin takes many of its qualities from the mythological griffin. With the head and wings of a vulture and the body of a lion, the Vulture Griffin appears to be a vegetarian, which is contradictory to both of its inspirational animals. The mane of the Vulture Griffin is made of white feathers, and it surrounds the base of the neck, as opposed to the back of the head as in lions.

[edit] Winged Lemur

"The Southern Air Temple" Curious and energetic creatures, the Winged Lemurs are very similar to real lemurs, with the same body structure, tail, and coloration. They are a cross between a lemur and a spotted bat. The rest of the winged lemur appears bat-like, though unlike bats, the winged lemur seems to glide more than fly. The winged lemur also has opposable thumbs which allows them to escape the situations they put themselves in.

The first winged lemur to be seen, Momo, was found at the Southern Air Temple.

[edit] Wolfbat

"The Cave of Two Lovers" The Wolfbat is a hybrid of two typical macabre creatures that can easily instill fear in those that step into their dwellings. Its body is similar to a wolf but with a bat-like face and leathery wings that fold up under its front legs, allowing it to walk on all fours. Like bats, they seem to fly in groups, making them all the more dangerous. They appear in the video game.

[edit] Woolly Mandrill

"Tales of Ba Sing Se" One of the creatures Aang first saw at the zoo in Ba Sing Se. The woolly mandrill has the body of a woolly mammoth with the head of a mandrill, but has the similar physique of a rhinoceros. It behaves more like a peaceful dog at times, but when it is angered or confused, it acts like a wild elephant or rhino. Not much else is known about it.

[edit] Zebra Seal

"The Boy in the Iceberg" Also known as the Polar Sea Lion, the Zebra Seal's body is mostly seal-like, aside from zebra-striped markings across the back and stomach. The markings enable the seals to hide their numbers while in the water when hunting for fish. These animal prefer to lay together in large masses and howl loudly when disturbed. The zebra seal made its first appearance when Aang escaped his iceberg; the beam of light created caused the seals to howl in unison.

[edit] Unseen Animals

These animals have been mentioned in the show (or in other forms of media) but so far they have remained unseen. They are listed with the source that provided their names.

[edit] Video Game Animals

The following are animals that only appear in the Avatar: The Last Airbender video game.

  • Wolf (normal)
  • Dark Wolf (stronger, darker variation of the Wolf)
  • Ancestral Bear
  • Feral Cat

Nick.com Autumn Twilight: Scorpiontiger, Fire Wolf, Vulture Hawks and others not listed here.
