[edit] The Main Three
[edit] Yorick Brown
A young amateur escape artist, Yorick is the last man on Earth. As such, he often has to travel in disguise to avoid drawing attention from groups like The Daughters of the Amazon. He is often reckless and tries to defuse tense situations with his humor. He is an under-achiever and a slacker, but actually quite bright. He has a degree in English, knows far too much about pop culture, and has "Fuck Communism" engraved on his lighter. Yorick mentions that the engraving was inspired by a "graphic novel" he read, presumably Garth Ennis' Preacher. It has since been learned the only real reason he survived the plague is due to the fact that he owned Ampersand, and handling Ampersand's feces in cleaning him up gave him Ampersand's resistance to the plague. He is also Beth's boyfriend, and maintains a semi-monogamous relationship with her. During their 4 years apart, he has only slept with 1 other woman and kissed 2 others. Since learning that Beth was still alive he has become obsessed with trying to reunite with her, often leading to arguments with Agent 355 and Dr. Allison Mann over what their priorities should be.
[edit] Agent 355
Agent 355 is Yorick's intelligent, mysterious, tough-as-nails bodyguard. Her real name has never been revealed. Some characters believe she is responsible for the plague, as the moment the plague struck, she removed an artifact called the Amulet of Helene from the nation of Jordan. The amulet's deceased owner warned that if it was ever taken from its homeland, it would create a tragedy greater than the Trojan War. She is part of the Culper Ring, a mysterious US government agency. Her parents and sister were killed in a car accident when she was young and she was recruited while fleeing a foster home following a fight with two racist boys. Her name is pronounced "three fifty-five", not "three-five-five". She is at least the tenth agent to have that number.
[edit] Doctor Allison Mann
Expert geneticist, possibly the greatest one still alive, she is seeking to discover the cause of the plague and why Yorick survived. Her original lab was burned down, thus beginning the group's journey so Allison could recover her notes to help her solve the mystery of the plague. Allison is a lesbian and has developed feelings for Agent 355, who reminds her of one of her exes. Mann believes she may be responsible for the plague, since it happened the instant she gave birth to her non-viable clone. She is Chinese and Japanese by parentage, and changed her name to Allison Mann (from Ayuko Matsumori) to annoy her Japanese father. At a young age she moved to Los Angeles, California with her father. Before moving to the US she told her father that she is a lesbian; her mother only found out after the plague. Her first lover was named Mercedes. After graduating UC Berkely she was given a job at Harvard University. Years later at Harvard, a student named Sunil helped her clone herself. Her surname is ironic, considering the themes of the series.
[edit] The three Beths
[edit] Beth Deville
Beth is Yorick's girlfriend. When the plague hit, she was engaged in anthropological work in Australia. For a time, she was stranded in the Outback; she is now headed to Paris after a hallucination that convinced her Yorick was headed there. Her favorite movie is Miller's Crossing.
[edit] Beth II
Beth II is a former flight attendant who was in the air when the plague hit. She forcibly landed the plane, though most passengers died during the crash. She later took up residence in an abandoned Catholic church, where she met Yorick. The two had unprotected sex, and it is eventually revealed that she is pregnant with his child (an ultrasound showed it to be a girl). Yorick sent Beth a letter by way of Hero, asking Beth to befriend his sister. He felt the two "nutty broads" deserved one another. As of issue 44, Beth II had given birth and named her daughter Beth.
[edit] Beth Jr.
The infant daughter of Beth II and Yorick Brown.
[edit] Family and Friends
[edit] Dr. M / Doctor Matsumori
Doctor Allison Mann's father, and also her main rival in cloning research. Only seen inside a biohazard suit with an opaque helmet until recently, he seems to be responsible for Ampersand's surviving of the plague, due to testing of a special serum, and possibly the plague itself. When the plague hit, he hired the ninja Toyota to get Ampersand back. He was revealed as Dr. Mann's father in issue #50, having also survived the plague. However, his survivor guilt and personal feelings toward the necessity of the male gender leads him to attempt a murder-suicide with Yorick. However, he is stopped by Allison and killed during a struggle.
[edit] Mrs. Doctor Matsumori
Doctor Allison Mann's Chinese mother told the American President to send Yorick to Allison. At the end of "Kimono Dragons", she was kidnapped by Toyota. Was, until recently, suspected of being Dr. M.
[edit] Doctor Ming
Doctor Matsumori's lover; died while giving birth to a clone. She is one of four characters in the series who could conceivably have been the Dr. M referred to by Toyota along with Dr. Alison Mann and both of her parents.
[edit] Ampersand
Ampersand is Yorick's Capuchin monkey and the only other male mammal to survive the plague. Originally a test monkey that was delivered to Yorick by mistake due to a mix-up at an airport, he has since developed a close bond with Yorick, even though he still harbors some playful aggression towards him. Ampersand has proven to be untrainable, as evidenced by his need to wear a diaper and unwillingness to follow command. It is unknown if this is due to his background as a testing animal, or by choice to annoy Yorick.
[edit] Hero Brown
Yorick's older sister is a paramedic and Sarah Lawrence graduate who joined the Daughters of the Amazon after the plague. She lived in Boston and, after learning that a surviving male was headed there, she volunteered to track and kill him. As a victim of the Amazons' brainwashing, she was extremely angry towards Yorick and tried to kill him, but she eventually realized that she was wrong. Hero has been deprogrammed (though she still sometimes hears the voice of the Amazon leader in her head) and is helping her mother find Yorick. There is a strong implication that Hero was sexually abused by her grandfather as a child. She and Beth II have become friends (thanks to Yorick) and currently travel together.
[edit] Representative Jennifer Brown
Mother of Yorick and Hero Brown, who informed Alter Tse'elon of her son's existence. Later on in the series, Alter shoots and kills her.
[edit] Rose
Rose Copen is a spy and demolitions expert for the Australian navy, and is Allison Mann's lover. She joins Yorick, 355, and Dr. Mann on their quest to rescue Ampersand. Her true agenda becomes clear after Dr. Mann's mother stabs her with a jian: delirious, she confesses that she had been sent to spy on them. However, she maintains that she is in love with Allison and agrees to be impregnated with Yorick's clone for the benefit of Allison's research.
[edit] Others
[edit] Previous Agent 355
Before the current Agent 355, there were 9 others; the current was recruited by the former. The one that recruited the current Agent 355 died in her hands years later after the younger 355 foiled her attempt at assassinating the president.
[edit] Agent 711
Former colleague of Agent 355, she performs a shock treatment on Yorick. Killed by the Setauket Ring.
[edit] Agent 1033
Mentor of Agent 355 (though it is implicated that he and Agent 711 may have romantic connections by way of a photograph). He died in the plague.
[edit] Alter Tse'elon
New chief of the general staff for Israel, Alter was the leader of an Israeli commando unit sent to acquire Yorick Brown for her nation. She faced court martial but managed to escape by convincing her guards to join her and to shoot the judge. Her name is not actually Alter; because two siblings before her died in childbirth, her parents never told her her real name, calling her "Alter" in order to trick the angel of death from taking her life. Alter continuesly pursues the last man in an effort to give Isreal a strong bargaining position against the rest of the world for what she feels will be an inevitable assault on the Jewish people, however five years after the plague no attack on Isreal has occured. She also tells others that her younger siblings were killed by Palastinians even though this is untrue.
[edit] Anna Strong
One of the senior officials of the Setauket Ring. Defeated by Agent 355.
[edit] Captain Belleville
Captain of a submarine (HMAS Williamson) in the Australian navy.
[edit] Ciba Weber
Ciba was in orbit on the International Space Station when the plague hit. She got pregnant and conceived a boy, but did not known which one of the astronauts is the father. When he was born, they named him Vladimir, after his late father.
[edit] Daughters of the Amazon
The fanatical Daughters of the Amazon believe that Mother Earth cleansed itself of the "aberration" of the Y chromosome and plan to kill any male that escaped the plague. Identified by their lack of a breast, which they remove in a rite of initiation.
[edit] Epiphany
A former Canadian pop star, she was leading the Yakuza, but was destituted after the raid of Agent 355 and You.
[edit] Heather and Heidi Hartle
Two twin geneticists that live in Oldenbrook.
[edit] Joy
Joy was the leader of the militia that blocked the I-40 in Arizona. Killed by Agent 355.
[edit] Kilina
Kilina was the captain of "The Whale", a vessel that smuggled drugs. She had a fling with Yorick. Rose, working under the orders of Captain Bellevile, gave away her position. Kilina presumably died in the subsequent attack carried by the Australian Navy.
[edit] Leah
Leah was the daughter of Joy. Killed accidentally by Yorick.
[edit] Lucia Ober
Sister Lucia Ober is the highest-ranked woman in the Catholic Church.
[edit] Margaret Valentine
Former Secretary of Agriculture and current President of the United States.
[edit] Mercedes
The first lover of Dr. Allison Mann.
[edit] Natalya Zamyatin
She is a Russian Secret Agent, sent to search for the astronauts that survived the plague in the International Space Station. (Her English is "Beyond Broken")
[edit] Paloma West
A reporter for the "Monthly Visitor", she took a naked picture of Yorick to prove that there still was a living male.
[edit] P.J.
P.J. lived in Queensbrook and gave shelter to Yorick and Co. Killed by Leah.
[edit] Sadie
Sadie was part of the Israeli forces, serving under Alter Tse'elon. She was killed by her accomplices when she was presiding the Court Martial.
[edit] Setauket Ring
A secret organisation that was searching for the Amulet of Heléne, believing that the cause of the plague was the said item being removed from Jordan.
[edit] Sisters of Mercy
A Catholic organisation looking for a baby male to make him the next Pope.
[edit] Sonia
A former inmate at the Marrisville prison, she had a brief romantic moment with Yorick. Killed by Hero.
[edit] Toyota
A mercenary ninja who stalks and abducts Ampersand and takes him back to Japan on the orders of "Doctor M". She is short-tempered and violent, going so far as to cut off a part of Ampersand's tail every time he misbehaves.
[edit] Victoria
Victoria was the charismatic and manipulative leader of the Daughters of the Amazon. She claimed to have been a master chess player before the plague, but male sexism kept her from the recognition she deserved. She is now dead by way of an axe to the head (thrown by Sonia). Victoria still exists, in a way, as an image and voice in Hero's mind.
[edit] Vladimir and Joe
Along with Ciba, they were in the International Space Station. Both died when their ship exploded after landing.
[edit] Vladimir Jr.
The infant son of Ciba and Vladimir, conceived on the Soyuz space station and born in the "hot suite" run by the Hartle sisters. Aside from Yorick, the last known living male on the planet. The same genetic strain possibly found in Ampersand's feces that helped protect him and Yorick from the effects of the plague may protect Vladimir from life outside his sterile environment, provided the Hartles or Dr. Mann can isolate it.
[edit] You
A former Japanese policewoman turned Private Investigator turned android brothel matron. She helped Agent 355 raid the headquarters of the Yakuza.
