The Burgate School And Sixth Form Centre opened in 1957 and is an 11-16 comprehensive school with a post-16 sixth form which opened in 1995. The school is situated in Fordingbridge, Hampshire and at the current time has around 1000 pupils, of which approximately 200 are sixth form students. This school is heavily over-subscribed as a result of its excellent examination results, with pupils achieving results well above the national average at all levels, and many sixth form students going on to top universities (including Oxbridge). The school has tried to acquire specialist status; firstly as a sports school and more recently as an English school. The school's motto is 'Learning for Life.'

[edit] Tutor Groups & Houses
Each year group has six tutor groups and each of the tutor groups in the 11-16 school is given a 'house.' There are six houses: Delta, Gamma, Lambda, Omega, Pi and Theta. The houses are on a vertical basis, not a horizontal one, whereas the tutor groups themselves are named after the initials of the teachers e.g. 9NH. Houses compete against each other during the annuals sports day.
[edit] Rewards & Sanctions
The school has a very strict punishment system, with Sunday detentions in the company of the headteacher for the worst offenders. However, to celebrate achievement there are annual prizegiving ceremonies for each year group.
[edit] Staff
The current headteacher is Mrs Celia Nicholls who first joined the school as a teacher in the early 1980s and quickly moved on to become headteacher, a role she has maintained since.
There are around 50 teachers at the school, five of whom make up the Senior Management Team (SMT): David Pover, Robert Slater, Fiona Bradfield and Ian Kirby.
[edit] Ofsted - Inspections
The school performed very well in the recent Ofsted report; it was however criticised for "spoon-feeding" the pupils too much. Another weakness recognised by Ofsted include poor standards in modern foreign languages, yet overall the school is rated very highly both in the local area and nationally and has been recognised by Ofsted for its generally high standards of learning and teaching.
