The Cicada

The Cicada is a six furlong dash on the dirt for thoroughbred horses run in March at Aqueduct Racetrack on Long Island, New York. A Grade III stakes for three-year-old fillies, it offers a purse of $100,000.
The Cicada is in its 15th running in 2007.
Inaugurated in 1993, this race is run in honor of Cicada, voted champion two-year-old filly in 1961, champion three-year-old filly in 1962, and champion handicap filly or mare in 1963. As a two-year-old she won, among other stakes races, the Gardenia, the Frizette Stakes, the Matron, the Spinaway Stakes, the Schuylerville Stakes, the National Stallion Stakes (Filly Division), and the Blue Hen Stakes. When she was three, she took the Jersey Belle, the Beldame Stakes, the Mother Goose Stakes, the Acorn Stakes, the Kentucky Oaks, and the Oaks Prep. As a four-year-old she won the Sheepshead Bay Handicap, the Vagrancy Handicap, Distaff Handicap, and the Columbiana Handicap.
