The Light is the second single off Common's 2000 album Like Water For Chocolate. It is produced by Jay Dee. It samples the song "Open Your Eyes" written by Bobby Caldwell, Norman Harris and Bruce Malment. It is a confession of Common's love for a woman and is generally held to be among his best songs. Within the song's soulful soundscape, Common references Stevie Wonder's song "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours".
The song received a 2001 Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance. It was also featured on the Dave Chappelle's Block Party soundtrack.
The B-Side to "The Light" is "Funky For You", a lighthearted funk-jam. It features Bilal, and Jill Scott, and was produced by Jay Dee, and James Poyser (who also plays a vocoder on the track).
