Ride Information
Ride Type: Von Roll sky ride
Operated: 1971-1981
Park Section: Illinois and USA
Ride Summary: In 1971, Six Flags Over Mid-America (later renamed Six Flags St. Louis) was built. With it the USA SkyWay was built in the "America" section of the park. This was a scenic ride that is called “Von Roll” style. It consisted of many cars, called gondolas, that were put on metal ropes, almost like a sky lift. There were three footers that helped keep the ropes up. It was quite popular among young children and older adults who were not interested in Big rollercoasters. It was located where the Xcalibur ride is today. The three footers are still in place; one is behind the Wok & Roll center, another is by an airbrush station near the Hannibarrels, and the third is behind Miss Kitty’s. On July 26, 1978, a gondola fell off the ropes and fell to the ground. The fall killed three and seriously injured one. The ride was repaired, and began running again. The ride was officially closed and torn down in 1981. The cause of this is probably due to a lack of ridership after the accident.
