[edit] Plot
Oscar Novak (Perry), an aspiring architect and his business partner, Peter Steinberg (Platt), have just landed a career-making opportunity with a Chicago tycoon Charles Newman (McDermott) who has chosen them to compete for the design of a multi-million dollar cultural center. In a ploy for publicity, Newman has pitched Oscar and Peter in a neck-and-neck competition with their archrivals and former colleagues, the hugely successful (and equally ruthless) Decker and Strauss. Though in a comic twist Oscar is mistaken for a gay man when meeting with Charles Newman. Under the mistaken impression that Oscar is homosexual, and therefore a safe companion for his girlfriend Amy (Campbell), he asks Oscar to keep an eye on her for him. Naturally, Oscar falls for Amy virtually on sight, but she thinks he's gay and thus he is forced to maintain the charade of being gay to avoid getting into trouble with Newman, and losing the commission.

[edit] Trivia
- When Matthew Perry first goes to Amy's apartment, she asks him "Are you always this nervous?" This is the same question 'Bruce Willis (I)' asks him when they first go for a car ride in The Whole Nine Yards (2000). Both times the response is "yes."
- Perry's portrayal of Novak has been described as "Chandler becomes an architect".
- In both Friends and Three to Tango, Perry's character is mistaken for a homosexual.
- This is Neve Campbell's second time working with a cast member from Friends. Her first was with Courteney Cox in the Scream Trilogy.
- Matthew Perry was offered a script like this earlier in his career, but he found it to lack character depth.
