Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop (1996) |
No. 4 (1999) |
Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop was the third CD released by Stone Temple Pilots on March 26, 1996, by Atlantic Records. The album is noticeably different from the previous two albums by the band, for the recognizable deep voice of Scott Weiland is gone, replaced by a higher, much smoother croon. This album is heavy on bass, and the band "has added a new array of sounds that lend depth to their immediately accessible hooks."[1] The overall sound can be described as "jazzy", and on a side note, many of the songs bear a very striking resemblance to The Beatles (a notable example being "Lady Picture Show") and many more psychedelic bands of the 60's.
[edit] Conflict within STP
In 1995, Weiland was caught and convicted of buying crack cocaine. He was sentenced to one year's probation. Issues with drug use did not clear up after his sentence, and STP was forced to cancel most of their 1996-1997 tour for Tiny Music. Because of the tour cancellation, Tiny Music did not receive as much exposure as initially intended. The album was certified 2x platinum but was not near as commericially successful as STP's first two albums.
