[edit] Gameplay
As a typical golf game, the objective is to hit the ball into the hole using as few strokes as possible. Players may choose from a variety of characters and play in a variety of courses in the Mario universe. The six available courses range from the basic to exotic, including various Mario series enemies as hazards. Prior to the swing, the player chooses a club, general direction and power for the ball to travel. During the swing the player determines power by a timed meter, and optionally influences the direction and spin of the ball. The ball's actual path may be affected by the wind, as well as the ground it both lands in and is hit from.
Including the traditional stroke play (both tournament and single-player mode), match play, doubles, speed golf, and training mode, a number of more comical modes are available. Ring Attack and Coin Attack require the player to collect rings and coins respectively scattered throughout the course. Club Slots restricts the number of available clubs, and may give a bonus to the player. Other modes track the number of consecutive birdies, or let the player practice a particular kind of shot.

[edit] Trivia
- The final hole of the fifth Golf course in Ring Attack mode shows a Firework display in the background which appears behind Peach's Castle.
- On Hole 10 of Blooper Bay, there is a part that shows a hut with a wooden pier-walkway which resembles that of the one found in Gelato Beach in Super Mario Sunshine.
- Some coin patterns in Coin Attack are different, i.e. While playing on Hole 14 of Blooper Bay, one of the coin patterns is shaped like the Triforce from The Legend of Zelda series (this is the same for the coin shape on the putting green of Lakitu Valley's first hole), and in Lakitu Valley, one pattern looks like the GameCube logo, and another pattern spells out "1-2-3 GO!"
- If you manage to hit the ball in a patch of flowers on the Peach's Castle Grounds course (even though you probably don't want to), various colored Pikmin from the Nintendo games Pikmin and Pikmin 2 will fly out of the flowers, making a high-pitched noise as they do so.
- One of a few games where Bowser has actual voice acting as opposed to the usual growls and roars.
- When characters taunt, a caption is shown on screen, humourously, characters that don't speak in English (Like Yoshi and Koopa Troopa) often have very long captions to go with their very short sounds.
- If a player is able to hit a hole in one on a par-5 course, the game announcer states "Nice Albatross!", even though the correct term for this achievement is "Double Albatross" or "Condor".
- Bowser Jr. and Shadow Mario appear as two separate characters in the game (both of which can be unlocked). However, in Super Mario Sunshine, after beating Mecha Bowser in Pinna Park, it is revealed that Shadow Mario's true identity was Bowser Jr., who had disguised himself via a special mask (called by many the "Shadow Mask", although this item does not have an official name) that allowed him to transform into the villain. Since they both appear separately, it can be inferred that someone else has found and worn this mysterious mask, but this is not certain. At the end of Super Mario Sunshine, however, II Piantissimo found the "Magic Brush" thus he may actually be Shadow Mario.
- In the Japanese version, Mario Golf: Family Tour, Princess Peach can be seen wearing a thong as underwear. This was edited out of the North American and European release.
- In the Japanese version of the game, when Princess Peach strikes a full power shot with the 1W club, her butt jiggles. This can only be seen using devices such as Action Replay.
