[edit] History on the Show
Originally a background character, his first line was in "Tweek vs. Craig" when he told Stan that Craig had gone home. In the season four episode, "Cartman's Silly Hate Crime 2000", he gets his first important role. His name was revealed as Token Williams, this stayed the same until the season eight episode "Quest for Ratings" in which it changed to Token Black. This may have been because he is the "token-black" kid in school. Clyde and Jimmy also received name changes in this episode. Since season six he, as have many of the other classmates, has become more prominent.
[edit] Character Traits
[edit] Wealth
Token is well known for being the wealthiest kid in South Park, his parents own a mansion and because of him being so different, he was mocked. In the episode "Here Comes the Neighborhood", Token becomes tired of being an outcast and successfully gets more rich people to move to South Park. All of whom were famous African-Americans.
[edit] Music
Token, as revealed in "Christian Rock Hard", can play a bass line after Cartman told him he could, because he's black. This is one of the many racist stereotypes Cartman aims at Token in this episode.
[edit] Singing
As well as playing instruments, Token also has a talent at singing, as revealed in the episode Wing. He sung for the Ms. Colorado Beauty Pagent and won $200. He eventually lost his money when he hired an agent and wound up serving drinks at Sylvester Stallone's son's wedding.
[edit] Racism
Racism has also been a theme based around Token. Since the demise of Chef, Token and his parents are the only African-Americans in the whole town. When Cartman threw a rock at Token because Token called him fat along with the other kids, it was classed as a hate crime. Later on in the series Cartman has taunted Token that he can play bass along with other things when they started a Christian rock band. When the boys were making a news show for CCTV, Cartman tells Token to change his voice for presenting, which he does. In Free Willzyx, while the other boys have their faces camoflauged black, his is white. In the season eleven episode, With Apologies to Jesse Jackson, Token felt offended by Stan's dad saying "niggers" as an answer on Wheel of Fortune. He eventually forgave Stan when he realised that he could never understand how it feels to hear the word from an African-American's viewpoint.
Token's name and first name are a parody of Tokenism, which is a way of criticised including ethnical diversity in movies, TV shows, etc.
