Tony Coton (born May 19, 1961 in Tamworth, England) was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Tony is currently employed as Manchester United's goalkeeping coach. Working with the likes of Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak.
Tony started his Professional career at Birmingham City in 1978, having signed from Mile Oak Rovers, although he did not make his first league appearance until the 1980-81 season. By the 1982-83 season he had established himself as Birmingham's first choice goalkeeper.
Despite relegation at the end of the next season, Tony found his way back into the top flight with a transfer to high-flying Watford F.C., for a sum of £300,000, and soon he had replaced Steve Sherwood in Watfords goal. At the end of his second full season at Vicarage Road he won the Hornets' Player of the Season and Display of the Season awards, the latter for a cleansheet against Liverpool.
Before the start of the 1990-91 season, Coton was bought for just under £1,000,000 by Manchester City. By the end of the following season, his form had been so impressive that he won the City Player of the Year award (an award he received again in the 1993-94 season) and an England B cap.
His time at Manchester City was cut short by injury, and the signing of Eike Immel, and in 1996 made the move across the city to Manchester United for £500,000. He never broke into the United team and moved on to Sunderland after just six months, for a fee of £600,000.
He made a few impressive performances for his new club before he unluckily broke his leg during a league match against Southampton. The leg was fractured in five places and marked the end of a long career.
