The 1924 UK general election was held on 29th October 1924. The Conservatives, led by Stanley Baldwin did dramatically better than in the 1923 general election and obtained a large parliamentary majority. Labour, led by Ramsay MacDonald, lost a few seats, but the big losers were Herbert Henry Asquith's Liberals who lost 118 of their 158 seats.
Many attribute the results of the election to the Zinoviev Letter, which was published in the Daily Mail four days before the election, though it is difficult to demonstrate that this had a major impact, as the Labour vote actually increased from 1923. This may be due to Labour putting up eighty more candidates than they did in the previous years election.
