The University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (Welsh: Athrofa Prifysgol Cymru, Caerdydd, commonly: UWIC) is an institute of higher education and member of the University of Wales situated in Cardiff. It operates from four campuses; Llandaff on Western Avenue, Cyncoed, Colchester Avenue and Howard Gardens in the City Centre. UWIC boasts some 9,000 students, making it a mid-sized higher education provider.
UWIC offers courses in art and design, sciences, business and IT, teacher training, humanities, social sciences, health, sport, engineering, tourism and leisure. Study is available at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, full-time and part-time, and research opportunities are offered. UWIC's range of programmes and subjects identify it as sharply focused on professionally and vocationally relevant higher education, and on research that is predominantly applied in nature.
UWIC has a number of centres of excellence. Its Food Research and Consultancy Unit is internationally renowned. The institute is home to Wales' National Indoor Athletic Centre which is based at its Cyncoed campus, and in May 2005 it became the first institute of higher education in the UK to obtain the government Charter Mark for a fourth year.
UWIC's school of life-long learning is becoming fast renowned for its excellence. With such courses as 'English & Popular Culture' and 'Sociology & Criminology' UWIC is fast ascending the ranks of universities, despite for now, being a considerable distance behind Cardiff University. UWIC's library and computer facilities are beyond reproach, incorporating a highly convenient contact system between peers and lecturers, which has attributed to the success of UWIC.
