[edit] SI notation style
This is the style following the SI/ISO 31-0 notation style where no punctuation mark, but a thin space can be used in every three places of digits present in large numbers. Note that this is different from the MOSNUM format, where commas are being used in every three places. i believe that Wikipedia should follow the international style of numbering instead of the official style incorporated by Wikipedia as the ISO 31-0 version is an internationally recognised format. This should be consistent for all large numbers in this project as well. --Siva1979Talk to me 19:48, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
- That makes much sense, as using dots or commas is confussing: i.e. In Spain a dot would be used instead the anglosaxon notation style (comma). Regards, E Asterion u talking to me? 20:16, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
- I have been more consistent here by changing the style of the number within the template to follow SI/ISO 31-0 notation format where no punctuation mark, but a thin space can be used in every three places of digits present in large numbers. For bigger numbers, due to space constrains, the font should be reduced slightly. --Siva1979Talk to me 04:37, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- Very good work. --Meno25 14:47, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

- People keep changing these to include commas, and I agree that they ought to. This is the English Wikipedia and using commas is the common thing. SlimVirgin (talk) 21:55, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Testing some new coding
In response to Slimvirgin's query, I have written some code to allow for user preference with regards to the comma. The test template is {{Template:User 45 000e/test}}, and it defaults to the existing design. However, if you use {{Template:User 45 000e/test|comma}}, it will display the 45 000 edit count box with comma formatting. I've put it as a "test" template for now, to see how it works.
One quirk of the coding, as presently written: any text after the pipe character will trigger the comma, while leaving it blank will go with the default. It's not really a big deal, but it would be nice to clean that part up so that ONLY the term "comma" triggers the comma. Also, I need to resolve why this template shows up under [[Category:Wikipedians with over 45,000 edits]], while the regular one doesn't.
Part of the design philosophy was to ensure that users who prefer a comma can select it, without requiring existing users to make a change in order to keep what they already have. That's why it uses the "IF-THEN-ELSE" logic. Once all the bugs are worked out, and assuming no objections are presented, I'll extend the coding to all of the edit count boxes. Let me know what you think. --Ckatzchatspy 22:00, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
