Valor Telecom was a rural wireline telephone company. In December 2005, Valor announced that was being acquired by the landline division of Alltel in a tax-free stock merger. The merger more than doubled its coverage area. On April 10, 2006, Valor announced the merged company would rename itself Windstream Communications following close of the merger.
Windstream began operations on July 17, 2006.
