West End, Surrey
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
West End is a village in the county of Surrey.
It sits between Camberley and Woking. The A322 runs north south through the middle of the village. Neighbouring villages include Donkey Town, Bisley, Lightwater, Knaphill and Chobham. Located in the borough of Surrey Heath, it neighbours the heath, Westend Common, which includes the training ranges of the British army. The River Bourne runs through the village from its source in Westend Common to the west of the village.
West End obtained its name because it was once the west end of Chobham. Although many new houses have been built around the village it was, until recently, a noted centre of nursery gardening. Westend Common is home to many rare heathland plants and has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) by English Nature.[2] It is also a Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area within the remit of Surrey Heath.[3]
The region has been settled for a long time with a megalithic barrow on Westend Common.[4]
The village has two schools: the Holy Trinity Church of England Junior school and Gordon's School which was built as a commeration of Gordon of Khartoum. The village is made up of the old houses, a new estate and a selection of small shops, hairdressers and a BP garage.
Brian May, lead guitarist of legendary rock band Queen is a local resident.
