Welcome to the Organizations WikiProject on the English Wikipedia! We are a group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of local, regional and international organizations. If you would like to join us, please feel free to add your name to the list of project members!
Please note that this WikiProject was recently overhauled and will be streamlined and developed further in the coming days. Oldsoul 00:13, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
- Goals
-
- To provide guidelines and recommendations for articles that describe organizations.
-
- To improve Wikipedia's coverage of organizations by creating, expanding, and maintaining such articles.
-
- To develop and maintain a featured quality portal, with an intuitive system of navigation templates, as well as various infoboxes and an integrated assessment process for articles.
-
- To serve as the central point of discussion for issues related to organizations in Wikipedia.
- Scope
- The project generally considers articles about any incorporated, registered, or otherwise legitimate organization to be within its scope. The term "organization" is applicable to any active or historical association, society, union, foundation, or corporation as well as any related and notable conferences or events.
- Structure
- Modelled after WP:WARS, internally the project will develop several structural features to help in managing its extensive work:
- Coordinators, who are responsible for maintaining the administrative aspects of the project.
- Departments, which coordinate work on certain specialized tasks, such as the main portal, article assessment, peer review, or other project-wide collaboration.
- Task forces, which are more informal groups for collaboration on specific areas of organizations, such as particular locations, regions, or types.

[edit] Organization not Organisation
For the purposes of this WikiProject and all related articles, and categories, we will use the organization standard. Also, all categories shall be lower-case organization.
American spelling accepts only -ize endings in most cases, such as organize, recognize, and realize. British usage accepts both -ize and the more French-looking -ise (organise, recognise, realise). However, the -ize spelling is now rarely used in the UK in the mass media and newspapers, and is hence often incorrectly regarded as an Americanism,[1] despite being preferred by some authoritative British sources, including Fowler's Modern English Usage and the Oxford English Dictionary, which until recently did not list the -ise form of many individual words, even as an alternative. Indeed, it firmly deprecates this usage, stating, "The suffix, whatever the element to which it is added, is in its origin the Greek... (or) Latin -izare; and, as the pronunciation is also with z, there is no reason why in English the special French spelling in -iser should be followed, in opposition to that which is at once etymological and phonetic."[2]
Worldwide, -ize endings prevail in scientific writing and are commonly used by many international organizations. .
