WPBZ is located in the West Palm Beach, Florida area and broadcasts at 103.1 FM. Known as "103.1 The Buzz", it is a modern rock music station with the slogan "Florida's New Rock Alternative". WPBZ is the only Florida station currently airing The Opie and Anthony Show weekdays from 6-9 AM.
WPBZ signed on as 103.1 The Buzz on July 3rd, 1995 (it was an affiliate of the "Z Rock" radio network before then), and its 90,000-watt signal blankets South Florida's east coast from Hollywood in the south all the way to Sebastian in the north, a span of over 125 miles.
WPBZ's transmitter is located on the west side of Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound and is 972 feet high. Also sharing WPBZ's transmitter tower are stations WMBX and WKGR.
The airstaff includes: Opie & Anthony in morning drive with local producer Tre, Jason Davis in mid-days, Nik Rivers in afternoon drive, Ross Mahoney in nights, and Jade in overnights. Weekend airstaff include: Cali, Gazer, Hobart, Jenna, Metal Mick, Pridemore, and Travis. Past members of the Buzz airstaff include: Amy Doyle, Mark Summers, Dahmer, Genny Layne, Cindy Wallace, Jason "Meathead" Anfinsen, Dominick Centi, Robert English, Dan Stone, Jim Moore, Dan O'Brien, Eric Kristensen, Jeremy Loper, Tim "the new guy", "Sausage Boy", Noah Blaustein, Anthony Siscar, "Insane" Jay, Glenn Glazer, Bryan "Whisker Biscuit" Smith, "Johnny Sports Guy", and several others. The Program Director is John O'Connell. One DJ, Jason Davis, has been a member of the airstaff since the station signed on in 1995.
Specialty music shows include Buzz Light (airing Sunday mornings from 7-11 AM) and Buzz Junior. Buzz Light is described as "the lighter side of The Buzz" and is hosted by Jason Davis. Past hosts include Dan O'Brien and Glenn Glazer. The show features album cuts, acoustic and live music from Buzz artists, and lighter songs from artists that might not normally be played on The Buzz.
Buzz Junior (airing Sunday nights from 10 PM to midnight) features lots of new music, unsigned local bands, indie bands, and classic older songs.
WPBZ broadcasts at 103.1 on the FM dial and also broadcasts an HD radio (high definition, hybrid digital) signal. It is expected by the end of 2006 that The Buzz will begin broadcasting a Buzz Light sub-channel on its HD signal and begin streaming the main Buzz broadcast through its website, www.buzz103.com.
[edit] Buzz Bake Sale
The Buzz hosts as all-day music festival each year called the "Buzz Bake Sale" which is one of the largest annual music festivals in South Florida. It is usually held on the first Saturday in December in West Palm Beach. The show has always been held at the Sound Advice Amphitheatre (formally known as Coral Sky Amphitheater). Each year, information about the show is posted at www.buzzbakesale.com. The "Buzz Bake Sale" name was chosen because the first two years featured 13 bands (a "baker's dozen" of bands).
