WPTV is the NBC network affiliate in West Palm Beach, Florida, broadcasting on VHF channel 5 and in high definition on UHF channel 55. Its transmitter is located in Greenacres, Florida.

The station is owned and operated by The E.W. Scripps Company, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is the only long-lived station in Southeast Florida to be affiliated with the same network (NBC) since it signed on.

WPTV first signed onto the air on August 22, 1954 with the call letters WJNO-TV. The first words were uttered by control room director Vern Crawford, who later became a fishing reporter for the station: "The power has just been turned on for WJNO-TV channel 5 by Frank M. Folsom, president of the Radio Corporation of America." At that time, the station was owned by William Cook and Theodore Granick and there were only 32 employees working at the station.

It was later purchased by the Phipps Family in 1956, and they would change the call letters to the current WPTV.

Then, in 1961, a man named Mort Watters purchased the station for Scripps Howard.

In 2001, they also moved from their old facilities on Flagler Drive to a larger, newer and advanced complex at 1100 Banyan Boulevard on the city's west side approaching Clear Lake. The building's exteriors portrayed the exteriors of the fictional television studio during the second season of the NBC sitcom Good Morning, Miami.

The "Circle 5" logo is a variation of the logo used for many years by its Cleveland sister station, WEWS-TV (they resurrected the logo in January 2007). The station's radar is called Vipir 5.

In early 2006, weekend meteorolgist Rob Lopicola left the station for a more "spiritual path." Then and current fill-in meteorlogist Chris Zelman replaced Lopicola until they found a replacement, which is Glenn Glazer today.

WPTV will soon launch NBC Weather Plus. Although not owned by NBC Universal, WPTV has a local page on the main Weather Plus website. [1]
