WUWM (89.7 FM) is a radio station in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is owned and operated by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The station refers to itself on-air as "Milwaukee Public Radio".
WUWM signed on the air in September 1964.
WUWM is a local affiliate for National Public Radio, Public Radio International, American Public Media and also airs BBC World News in the overnight hours. WUWM also airs considerable amounts of local programming and also fills airtime with adult album alternative music.
According to their website: "While the station is the broadcast home to major news programs from NPR, WUWM also focuses much of its programming on the issues, people and ideas that makes the region a vibrant place to live.
WUWM is home to the largest radio-only news department in Milwaukee. Our reporters explore the issues that are important to our community. Rather than simply follow the same news agenda as Milwaukee's newspapers and television stations, the WUWM staff takes the time necessary to explain, for example, how an action by local government will affect area residences and businesses. The work of our reporters has been honored in local, regional and national journalistic competitions."
WUWM Station Manager Dave Edwards is on the Board of Directors of National Public Radio.
