[edit] Welcome!
Hi!
It's great to see you here on wiki! You have some seriously good photos on pdphoto, and I would love to see some at higher res. You know of FPC I guess? You should become a regular visitor! How many camera's do you have?! These are some of my favs: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] but I haven't even seen all of your work. Well done, and I shall watch your future progress with considerable interest :-) --Fir0002 www 07:50, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks.
The photo resolution issue is something I'm spending quite a bit of time pondering. I need to balance several needs.
- The PDPhoto website has gotten very busy over the years. And moving to photos which are larger and less compressed could be a problem. Right now the server and bandwidth are easily paid for by the ads, but that wouldn't be true for long if I moved to 1600x1200, 1 MB images.
- The vast majority of the photo usage is by school kids, churches, bloggers, etc. And for those the resolution is fine.
- There may well be a time when I want to make some money from the hi-res versions. Sure, they're public domain and anyone can use them for free, but I still have physical ownership of the originals. Once I publish hi-res versions though, some potential revenue dries up.
- Several people have spidered the site and compiled commercial photo CDs which they're selling. I don't have a problem with that when the files are low res. Good for them. But if the files were hi-res versions I think I'd start to really feel used. That may be irrational, but it's an issue.
- I really like Wikipedia. And I agree the files I'm currently providing through PDPhoto.org are wildly inadequate for encyclopedic purposes.
It's something I'll decide on in the next few months. What will probably happen is that I'll increase the file size and reduce the compression a wee bit on new photos. But it probably won't be enough to please the folks here. Such is life. But making the files a bit more useful for small businesses would be a good thing IMHO.
Cameras - I have a Canon 20D now. And lots of lenses. Opporationally the camera is a huge improvement over my old D60. But I'm not sure the photo quality is as good. That's a very subtle thing though.
You should keep in mind that I'm not a photographer. It's just a hobby. The problems with many of my photos are due to fact that I just don't spend much time trying to get a perfect photo. For example, the Tetons barn photo was just blurry to start with (compression artifacts people are bitching about are either sharpening effects or just plain blurry). And the lilac/dew photo is crappy because I didn't want to haul my tripod out into the cold wet meadow.
I seem to get some nice shots despite my laziness.
I'm hoping to spend more time on the editing side of Wikipedia. There are several articles I'd like to write. But I find that a distressingly high percentage of the significant contributors here are perniciously oblivious f*ckwits. I'm sure it's a character flaw on my part, but I have a serious problem suffering morons. So I'm not sure how long I'll be able to hang out here frankly.
A community that doesn't do a good job of excluding morons isn't a community I'll ever feel comfortable in. Especially when it's a community devoted to intellectual pursuits. --y6y6y6 14:36, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
Okay..... I just went through your user page, and then your photos. I realized that a long time I've been admired many of your photos without even bothering to look at who took them. Excellent work. --y6y6y6 15:34, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
- Thanx, I've got a request, could you look and leave comments on this page?--Fir0002 www 11:10, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Commons?
Hi, I was wondering whether you're aware of Wikimedia Commons (see also Wikipedia:Commons; http://commons.wikimedia.org/) and if you would consider uploading your public domain photographs there instead of here? Images uploaded to the English Wikipedia can only be used here; if someone wants to use it on, say, the German, French, or Spanish Wikipedia, they have to download the image from here and then upload it again. Commons, on the other hand, can be used at any of the Wikipedia projects directly, without needing to download them and upload them again. Angr (talk) 21:20, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Grand Teton Picture
The Grand Teton National Park picture currently featured on the Main Page is amazing! Nationalparks 18:08, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
Heh. This is the picture that the brainiacs in the featured pictures talk page said was too small and had glaring artifacts. One wonders if these people have ever even opened a real encyclopedia. Nice to see my little hobby pictures being put to good use despite the panty-bunching whiners. --y6y6y6 15:37, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
