Perhaps I misinterpreted you. This edit is copy-pasted from this article. Given your edit summary, "Just want to see how fast my addition will be deleted," it appeared to me that you were intentionally adding copyrighted material to Wikipedia in order to find out how well it works--which the last section of WP:POINT disallows. If this was not your intention, then perhaps I should have directed you to WP:Cite instead. No harm done, though. Dave (talk) 03:53, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Citing Sources on Sea Shepherd article

Could you please cite sources for your two 4 January edits to Sea Shepherd article? Because of the high profile of the article right now, it is especially important to clearly cite sources for edits made, especially edits that cast such a negative light on the organisation.

Citation already exist in the discussion page. But I added extra one from Greenpeace.

The citation needs to be made in-line in the article itself. It's not enough to just add a link to the discussion page, as most people reading the article will never look there or know what piece of information is linked to what source. With in-line citation using footnotes or parenthesis you can give the source for a specific fact or claim in the article. I think rule of citation is flexible depending on what it is refered to. Would you agree that reference regarding loss of observer status require no citation? it has multiple reference even by googling On the other hand, on "terrorist" accusation, I will look for the original citation which is appearently not in english.Yoji Hajime

While you're right that the rule is flexible in as much as most people don't bother to cite sources, when sources are cited it does make it much easier for current and future editors who want to verify specific information. It also makes it easier for casual readers do more research on their own. Thanks for citing the link in-line as I see you've done.

It would also be useful to have more information about the sinking of the Icelandic vessels added to the Sea Shepherd article. It seems there should be an article available about that somewhere on-line. I might do some googling later and see what I can find. mennonot 17:36, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your contributions. If you have time and are able to do so, it would be good to get references for the material you added to the article. As you can understand, it has been a controversial topic and other editors (but not myself) are sometimes quick to delete controversial material, if it is not referenced.
