Faculty of Technical Sciences (Novi Sad)

Faculty of Technical Sciences (Serbian Cyrillic: Факултет техничких наука, Serbian Latinic: Fakultet tehničkih nauka), short FTN, is high educational institution stationed in Novi Sad, capital of Serbian province Vojvodina and it is part of University of Novi Sad. It was founded on May 18, 1960, and today, with 700 employees and 9,000 students, it is one of the largest faculty in region.

Faculty of Technical Sciences was founded on May 18, 1960 by the decision of Serbian Parlament as Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Novi Sad as part of University of Belgrade. After founding University of Novi Sad on June 28, 1960, the faculty became integral part of it.
Faculty of Technical Sciences began his work with 7 teachers and 10 assistants in adapted building of Technical School. First dean of the newly opened faculty was Evgenije Čupić, and the first Chief of FTN council was Marko Bačlija.
All the studies were in two degrees and lasted 4 year. Lectures followed educational plan of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade.
In 1962 the faculty got building of Pedagogical Centre, where were held course for higher years of studing. For a time, building of Pedagogical Centre belonged to the Faculty of Law and later it was returned to the Faculty of Technical Sciences. Today it is known as the "F" Block. Additional 890 m2 of the laboratory and cabinet space has been built for the Department for Power, Electronics and Communication Engineering.
After the building of Institute of Mechanical Enginnering was completed in 1965, faculty got conditions for his faster development. In the academic year 1965/66 the faculty adopted new educational plan, and studies now lasted 5 years.
Building of Teaching block and Rectorate building were built in 1968. In 1971, the faculty began courses of Electrical and Civil Engineering as sections of adequate faculties from Belgrade.
By decision of the Parliaments of Vojvodina’s Assembly on April 22, 1974 Faculty of Mechanical Engineering grew into Faculty of Technical Sciences. Faculty of Technical Sciences had three departments: Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering. Dean at that time was Živojin Ćulum.
In the academic year 1978/79 Department of Mechanical Enginnering began courses on department for production mechanical engineering.
To solve the spatial problems the Faculty had, in 1979 the city of Novi Sad gave to it, for the purpose of use only, the facility of the former Factory of Mechanical Parts (TMD).
In the academic year 1978/79 the Department for Mechanical Engineering organized lectures in Kikinda, major in Production Engineering. In the academic year 1979/80 the Institute for Hydraulics and Traffic Engineering initiated the studies of Traffic Engineering at the Faculty. In 1987, the Large Systems Control Center was founded under the patronage of UNESCO.
Studies in Architecture began in the academic year 1996/97. In the academic year 1999/2000 began studies in Graphical Engineering and Design, Postal Traffic and Telecommunications, Industrial Engineering and Environmental Engineering.
The studies of Mechatronics as the interdisciplinary studies started in the academic year 2002/2003.

Faculty of Technical Studies is located n 7 buildings on the area of 29,000 m2 in the midle of University campus in Novi Sad. It consists of 38 chairs, 13 institutes – departments, 6 scientific centers and 6 administration offices.
Undergraduate studies are performed in 9 fields in 38 majors in the Serbian language and 2 fields in the English language.
Specialization studies are organized in 8 majors, while the Master's studies are organized in 47 majors.
The Faculty was the first one in the former Yugoslavia to certificate its quality system according to the international standards ISO 9001 at the Federal Bureau for Standardization and at the International Certificate Organization RWTÜV from Essen, Germany. The system has been re-certificated according to the changed standard ISO 9000 – 2000.
Currentlly, dean is proffesor Ilija Ćosić.
