Georgia statewide elections, 2006

The Georgia statewide elections are scheduled to be held on November 7, 2006. The primary election was held on July 18. Contests where no single candidate got a majority (50% + 1 vote) were decided in a runoff election on August 8.

Prior to the election, the Democrats hold most statewide offices, although the governor and a majority of the Legislature are Republicans.

In the Republican primary, incumbent Sonny Perdue defeated challenger Ray McBerry 88% to 12%, with 97% precincts reporting. In the Democratic primary, Lt. Governor Mark Taylor defeated Secretary of State Cathy Cox, Bill Bolton, and Mac McCarley with 51.7% of the vote to Cox's 44% (Bolton and McCarley received 2% of the vote each) with 97% of precincts reporting. Garrett Hayes, a Libertarian, will be facing Sonny Perdue and Mark Taylor in the general election. Independent John Dashler withdrew from the race, unable to collect the 40,000 signatures needed to go on the ballot.

In the July primary, Martin finished first with 41% over Hecht with 36%. Miles received 14%, Lotson 5%, and Terril 3%. [2] In the August 8 runoff, Martin defeated Hecht by a margin of 62% to 38% [3].

Republicans

• Ralph Reed, former Christian Coalition executive director (44%)
• Casey Cagle, state senator (56%)

In the July primary, Cagle beat Reed, 56% to 44%. [4]

In the August 8 runoff, with 97% of precincts reporting, Buckner received 55.2% of the vote and Hicks 44.8%.

• Bill Stephens (32.6%)

In the August 8 runoff, with 97% of precincts reporting, Handel had received 56.7% of the vote and Stephens 43.3%.
