Remy Smith (born in May 30, 1981 in The Bronx, New York) is an African American rapper and former member of Fat Joe's rap crew, Terror Squad. She is best known by her unmistakable flow and stage name, Remy Ma, although she originally went by the name Remy Martin (after the cognac). She was featured on the group's hit song "Lean Back" from their sophomore album True Story and in the remix of M.O.P.'s "Ante Up". Her debut solo album, There's Something about Remy: Based on a True Story, was released on February 7, 2006. She is one of three female rappers in history to have a number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with Terror Squad's number one single "Lean Back."

[edit] Biography
Remy grew up in the Castle Hill section of The Bronx. Her life was anything but pleasant, where drug addictions, child prostitution, and HIV/AIDS-infections were present in her family, ultimately leaving the children and home to Remy herself; she was forced to look after her four younger brothers and sisters, as well as perform household chores. She did rather well in school, but needed a way to vent anger, so began to write poetry (which she would turn into raps). She held freestyle battles against children in her school's cafeteria and even citizens on the streets of Castle Hill. Eventually, word of mouth began to spread of Remy and her impressive skills. After hearing of her, Big Pun instantly showed an interest in working with the aspiring rapper, whom he mentored up until his untimely death in 2000, a tragic event in Remy's life.
[edit] Terror Squad
After Big Pun's death, Fat Joe signed Remy to his new record label, SRC Records under Universal Records and made her a member of Terror Squad. Remy Ma got the attention of hip-hop fans in the summer hit of 2004 "Lean Back" along side Fat Joe in Terror Squad. Upon her arrival in the group, fans named her as the best rapper of the group along with Fat Joe, some fans even named her as the best member because of her lyrical abilities. Her debut album therefore received some attention from her Hip-Hop fans because of her verse in the single "Lean Back". Remy Martin was also featured in the "Lean Back" remix with Fat Joe, Lil Jon, Eminem & Mase. While doing an interview she stated she was no longer with Terror Squad.
[edit] Solo career
Remy has released three singles from her album There's Something About Remy: "Whuteva" , "Conceited", and "Feels So Good". "Conceited" was the most successful, however the album was largely a commercial failure selling only 75,000 units in its opening week. The album got 3.5 mics from The Source magazine. Remy has plans to re-release the album or release another album before Summer 2007.
Rumor has it that Remy might be signing with Virgin Records as she has displayed her frustration with SRC & Universal over the promotion of her debut album. She has also expressed her problems with Fat Joe on the business side as far as saying "We can still be friends but we just can't do business together." If the rumor is true about her signing with Virgin, there might still be tension between her and Fat Joe as he has also signed onto Virgin to release his latest album "Me, Myself & I" which was released on November 14, 2006. Remy has since ended her ties with Terror Squad and said she needs "to do her own thang." Remy says she and Fat Joe still remain close friends and she wouldn't throw away a 10 year friendship over a conflict of interest.
