Rudolf Kasztner

Rudolf (Rezső) Kastner (Kasztner), cunoscut şi ca Israel (Yisrael) Kastner, n. 1906, Cluj, Transilvania –d 12 martie, 1957, Tel Aviv, Israel era jurnalist şi jurist, de facto a fost şeful organizaţiei evreieşti în Budapesta numită Va'ada Ezrah Vehatzalah (Vaada), ori Comitetul de Salvare şi Ajutor. În perioada când Ungaria a fost ocupată de trupele naziste, în timpul celui de-al doilea război mondial, Kasztner a fost unul din intermediarii între nazişti şi comunitatea evreiască din Ungaria.

Rudolf Kasztner a fost acuzat într-un ziar că a colaborat cu naziştii. Kasztner l-a dat în judecată pe cel care a scris articolul şi l-a acuzat pe calomnie. Mărturiile aduse la proces s-au întors împotriva lui Kasztner. La sfârşitul procesului de calomnie, judecătorul că Kasztner a declarat că acesta şi-a văndut sufletul diavolului. At the end of April, fully two months before the train left, Kasztner had received information about the "Auschwitz Protocol". This was an extremely detailed report, compiled by Alfred Wetzler and Rudolf Vrba, left, two prisoners who had escaped from Auschwitz. They had seen the preparations being made for the mass murder of Hungarian Jewry -- by then Eastern Europe's last remaining Jewish community -- and hoped that once alerted, Hungary's Jewish leadership would organise resistance or encourage Hungary's Jews to flee into the countryside. „Eichmann himself had talked about Kastner a lot already when his interview Life magazine was first published on the 28th November and 5th December 1960:
I resolved to show how well a job could be done when the commander stands 100% behind it. By shipping the Jews off in a lightning operation, I wanted to set an example for future campaigns elsewhere . . . When he was with me, Kastner smoked cigarettes as though he was in a coffeehouse. While we talked he would smoke one aromatic cigarette after another, taking them from a silver case and lighting them with a silver lighter. With his great polish and reserve he would have made an ideal Gestapo officer himself. Dr. Kastner's main concern was to make it possible for a select group of Hungarian Jews to emigrate to Israel . . .
