The parallel 39° north is an imaginary circle of latitude that is 39 degrees north of the Earth's equatorial plane.
The parallel 39° north passes through Portugal, Spain, the Mediterranean Sea, Eivissa, Sardinia, Italy, the Ionian Sea, Greece, the Aegean Sea, Turkey, Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan, the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China, the Yellow Sea, North Korea, the Sea of Japan, Honshū, the Pacific Ocean, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and the Atlantic Ocean.
The parallel 39° north formed the original southern boundary of the British Colony of Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, a previous royal grant had given the land south of the parallel 40° north to the British Colony of Maryland. The Mason-Dixon Line was drawn between 1763 and 1767 as the compromise boundary between the overlapping claims of these two colonies.
