69 (sex position)

The sexual position 69, also known as soixante-neuf (French for the number), is one of the most commonly known sexual positions. In this position, two people orient themselves such that each person's mouth is near the other's genitals so that they can simultaneously perform oral sex, fellatio and or cunnilingus on each other.^[1] This can be done lying down, one on top of the other or side by side, or alternatively, one partner can stand while holding the other upside down. In this position the more sensitive underside of the penis is placed against the top of the receiving partner's mouth rather than against the tongue, thereby creating a sensation different from that of ordinary oral sex. Likewise, the clitoris is approached from the opposite direction. Variations include finger penetration to provide additional stimulation.

The term "69" derives from a reference to the fact that the digit 6 is the digit 9 rotated 180 degrees. In this position, the partners are similarly oriented.^[1] Also, the number represents the two partners, with the 'head' facing the opposite end.

The intensity of the sensations may diminish mutual pleasure, as one may find it difficult to concentrate on giving stimulation while receiving it.
