User talk:Alerante

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Welcome to my talk page! Here you can bring up things related to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects (all of the ones I've bothered to sign up for currently redirect here), or just anything you're curious about. Click the plus sign in the actions list above to create a new thread. Please demarcate the beginning of each one with a heading; otherwise, section editing won't be useful.

I tend to reply on your talk page with messages to turn on the "new messages" notice, because I'm evil and enjoy scaring the monkey out of people. Please indicate if you'd prefer to do all the scaring yourself instead. And, yes, I do prefer it alerante. :)

Note that this is an English Wikipedia page; if you're coming from a different wiki, make sure to log in first or indicate your username on the appropriate project. Really urgent stuff — "You've been a bad Wikipedian!" — should be e-mailed. Previous discussions can be found in the archives.

[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Linux

In case you are interested in this wikiproject... Best wishes, Samsara (talkcontribs) 17:35, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Since the project pretty much came into being today, I expect early adopters will still have a significant say as to the focus of the project. I did invite a bunch of people who contribute to the GNOME article, if that says anything. I don't think anyone else has claimed POSIX applications as their territory, so we might as well... - Samsara (talkcontribs) 19:25, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Some of the work I do involves Linux applications, and the main scope of the project hasn't been fully decided yet. So yes, as Samsara says, early adopters will have quite a large say in the direction the project goes. When I made the project I had the idea that it would deal with both Linux Distributions and the applications that run under them. Also, as Samsara said, no-one has claimed the *nix applications as such, so the field is quite open. --T. Moitie [talk] 20:20, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Woah!

Good work with List of Worms weapons and tools; that must have taken ages but it looks better than ever.  -- Run!  16:58, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] On Point Edit

I added a bit to the On Point page that mentioned the recent interview with Jimmy Wales. You retracted the edit that I made, is there a more appropriate place to make this change, such as Wikipedia:Press_coverage? In the edit history there is a mention of selfref, which I'm assuming means self referential, is that because I referred to Wikipedia itself?

Thanks,

RedShadow 22:31, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Minor Edits

So sue me, I have minor edits checked by default and forgot to uncheck it one time. ;-) Anyway, thanks for the reminder. -- Drakontas 00:23, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Some Questions

I was wondering why you changed my edition of News 14 Carolina. I am currently doing a report over Wikipedia and I would like your input, like what made you feel obligated to fixed minor errors and such... if you like, you can email me at huy_ph@yahoo.com

Thx

BigBoya

[edit] ddate

w00t!. was beginning to program that myself, but was very happy to see you'd already done so. I might take yours and modify it a bit though. The {{dis-year}} was entirely unsatisfying. Many thanks. Καλλίστη ! --Storkk 14:15, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

On that note, I was wondering if you have released the code for the template under the GPL or other OS license? That way, I can (as I already have done) make a copy and edit it. Obviously, the credit for original code goes to you. (in <!-- comments --> right now.) --Storkk 15:32, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

I believe the correct order is: "forkk, mangle, use (whatever is left)". :-). I only asked because what's published on WP is not _necessarily_ licensed GFDL. I'll take your reply as permission, however. Thank you very much... I'll let you know if I ever get around to modifying it. Hail Eris! Yes, I'm devout. --Storkk 01:28, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Replacement of PNG with SVG on {{guideline}}, et al.

Please don't replace the PNG image with an SVG on these templates; it renders badly in IE and is larger when converted to PNG (as MediaWiki does). æ² 2006-09-24t22:39z

None of that happens for me (on IE or Firefox). They should render identically in size and clarity, etc. What do you mean "rendered badly in IE"? —Mets501 (talk) (please respond on my talk page) 22:42, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fedora external links

Thanks for the help with the Fedora article. My problem at the moment is that I'm not sure how external links are treated in the English Wikipedia - quite a lot of articles have twenty or more links, and I'm not sure if everyone agrees with me that there should be only a handful which are really important and provide high quality and additional content. Btw., if there are any clear guidelines about the number and quality of external links in the English Wikipedia, please give me a link to them. I just know the German guidelines, and they seem to be quite different (or, maybe just stricter). --Liquidat 23:47, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

The English Wikipedia has an external links policy at WP:EL, which agrees with you (and me) in that "Links should be kept to a minimum." I usually accept three categories of links without discussion:
  1. the official Web site(s)
  2. reputable listings (IMDb, dmoz, etc.)
  3. and reliable sources (of course!)
Any external links that simply duplicate the content of (1) and (2) I usually get rid of; e.g., Fedora already has a torrent page, so we don't need to link anyone else's. After that I prefer discussing any other links that don't blatantly violate policy on the talk page; that's how a rather ugly argument at phpBB got settled — I see you're trying to start a discussion already. :)
If I get time I might try to do some more of the cleaning up you suggested on Talk:Fedora Core#Some points...; the article has been growing organically, I think, with people adding facts but not looking at it from the overall perspective of the whole page. æ²  2006‑12‑19t00:09z
Thanks for the answer and the help! --Liquidat 07:31, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] GeoURL

Hi! Isn't ICBM InterContinental Ballistic Missile?? Also the GeoURL website seems to be down mate! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Simonay (talkcontribs) at 08:45, 21 December 2006.

Down again? It happens.... "ICBM" actually refers to the slang term "ICBM address", meaning longitude and latitude. æ²  2006‑12‑21t14:39z

Oops! Thanks :) --Simonay 01:49, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:S60C

I'm not sure if this was intentional, but articles like Jack Rudolph and even Image:Andy_Mackinaw.PNG were showing up in Category:Templates_for_deletion. I've put the TfD category in {{S60C}} inside a noinclude. The page subtitle will still advertise the TfD on the affected pages. Gimmetrow 15:52, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dilbert split

Thanx. I moved some links you missed and also added a GFDL notice to the TV Series. — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 18:04, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Now there are a ton of individual episode articles, etc, that need to be fixed. I will do a handful and let you know when I am done, then you can go thru and finish off any I missed. — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 18:12, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
OK, I'm done. I'd recommend you finish the "maintenance" of the spin-off and go thru Special:Whatlinkshere/Dilbert and see what needs to move; I already grabbed any I saw that said "Dilbert Episode" along with a few templates and actor names I recognized. — RevRagnarok Talk Contrib 18:32, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Internet Forums Image

The image I placed online is a betterThe image of which I placed online was and is a better, stronger representation of an internet forum and in fact is an image of the leading software for internet forums. The image of which you chose to restore is not a good representation at all.

I am going to replace your edit with another edit of mine and I request that you leave it as is, unless you really want to take this to the highest courts of Wikipedia.

I am not affiliated with the page at all, but I do know the new age of internet based forums when I see it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Paranormalis (talkcontribs) 16:14, 6 March 2007 (UTC).
