Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), abbreviated as ACS (Independent), was originally established as the secondary section of Anglo-Chinese School in 1886 and was awarded independent status in 1988 to become the "Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)". The school is generally regarded as one of the top boys' schools in Singapore. Currently it offers both the Express stream and also the Integrated Programme (IP), which is a 6-year course leading to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

The campus has been expanded to accommodate pupils for the International Baccalaureate program which started in 2006. It was recognised as an IB World School in 2005 and houses a sports complex and as well as a boarding school. Its current principal and CEO is Dr Ong Teck Chin, who began his administration in 1994; its principal prior to this was Associate Professor Lawrence Chia.

Most, if not all of the school campus extension for the years 5 and 6 students has been completed. The construction has enlarged the total land area to 11 hectares. The total cost of the construction works is S$40 million.

[edit] Integrated Programme

The school started to offer the Integrated Programme (IP), starting in 2004. This program prepares secondary students for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in years 5 and 6. The proportion between the amount of IP students and Express students is almost equal. Most of the school's top students make part of the IP cohort. The school accepts students into this program at Year 1 and Year 3 (mostly transferred from Express stream students).

IP students take different subjects from the Express stream students. In Year 3 they are given the option to choose subject combinations. Special subjects worth noting offered in this program are Introduction to Human Societies (IHS), a multi-disciplinary humanities subject, Language Arts, a combined English language and Literature subject, and Philosophy of Disciplines (POD), which prepares students for the Theory of Knowledge course in IBDP. IP students also have to complete a combined 100 hours of Creativity, Action, Service, and Leadership in Year 3 and 4. They also must submit an Individualised Study Option (ISO) at the end of Year 4.

2007 will also see the school's first graduating batch of International Baccalaureate students.

[edit] Principals

The current Principal is Dr. Ong Teck Chin, having served as Principal in ACS (Independent) since 1994.

[edit] The Shaw Library and Resource Centre

The school library is named after its financial benefactor, Runme Shaw. It has 20 computers, 25,000 books and has a heritage walk at the back to educate others on the history of ACS. The school's Library Services Team takes a part in running and maintaining the Library, along with the professional librarians. An extension of the library was opened in 2007.
