Eighteen years later, the song was revived by teen singer Aaliyah, and became a charted hit reaching number six on the pop singles chart and number two on the R&B singles chart though reaching number twenty-seven in the UK pop charts. In of all the artists who covered the song, her version was the most successful.

The song became a hit based on a remix version Aaliyah cut with R. Kelly featured on the song chanting this is for the steppers and earlier saying, 1-2, checker, baby, lemme know what's up before Aaliyah began singing.
