It was a international smash hit peaking at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at #1 on The Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart where it stayed for 2 weeks. it was also a moderate hit in the UK peaking in the Top 25 of the UK Top 40 at #21 when it was originally released by itself, it was re-issued with One In A Million as a double A-side and the official UK peak position is #15 , If Your Girl Only Knew was also a hit in many other countries.

In the video Aaliyah appears at a party, on a motorcycle with Ginuwine, and by herself on a chair. She wears a dark leather outfit with her trademark sunglasses and bandana. Other cameos include Missy Elliott, Timbaland, 702, Lil' Kim and her brother Rashad.

A rap music group, comprised of University of Miami students and football players, recorded a song, "7th Floor Crew", recorded to the beat and chorus of "If Your Girl Only Knew". The song was subsequently criticized by the University of Miami administration and media.
It is one of the best selling singles in the United States, selling over 2 million copies.
