Batu Gajah

Batu Gajah (population 34,000) is a town located in the state of Perak in Malaysia, about 24 km from Ipoh, the Perak state capital.
[edit] Origins and History
The name Batu Gajah, which literally means "stone elephant" in the Malay language, is presumably derived from 2 large stones boulders that resembled elephants found along the Kinta river. Famous for it mining of tin long before independence day of Malaya, Batu Gajah had been an ideal place for Chinese citizen to stay and work during those years, and this contribute to a great number of Chinese citizen there today.
Batu Gajah had an established pre-war British English School, which was renamed Sultan Yussuf School (SYS) after the war. The current Sultan of Perak is a former student of this school. Formerly known as Government English School (GES), it is found by Mr. Malai Perumal Pillay on 1907 who uses wood and scrap from and rubbles from an old jail to build this school. Over the years, the school has produced many good students that have gone on to achieve successful careers around the world.

Batu Gajah is a very quiet town and ideal for pensioners and family people. There is not much for teenagers to do which most of them can easily go to Ipoh just about 30 KM from Batu Gajah for entertainments. But in recent time, Batu Gajah has seen improvement after improvement and just recently, a new beautiful post office had been built and greatly improve the scenery around Batu Gajah. MDKB also had greatly enhances the scenery of this quiet town by planting trees, applying new paintjob, and keep this town 24-7 clean.
